    hydrostream vegas hard to steer

i just purchased a 83 hydrostream vegas. with merc 200 black max, the boat runs good, but is hard to steer, the cables do not look old, torque pulls the wheel as well. i want to run the boat wide open, but steering gives me no confidence to do so. this is my first boat, is this normal? i've seen a v king w/ hydraulic steering guy says its much easier to drive. also the vegas doesnt seem to respond much to trimming up. other than shooting a giant rooster tail. any advice for a new performance boater would be nice...

first thing that comes to mind is the engine is to deep i got the same problem but cant go up to much more or ill loose water pressure
and at certain speeds its not hard at all
lets see pics of your steering and the engine height
maybe some one can spot the problem

x2 on the torque tab.... Makes a lot of difference. Very inexpensive and easy to install.

right where this thread should go. First gotta determine if the steering system is ok...which can be determined by steering it at rest, then disconnecting the cables from the engine and trying again.

first thing (i should have done already) going to clean off all crusty dried up grease on cables and rest of motor. then re-grease and lube everything. i will take some measurements (prop below hull) and check for a hook in the pad, i think torque tamer is installed, i will post pics of foot, the steering and the second prop and i got with the boat it is a Dennis 26 pitch

Steering cables look kinked. Still not clear if this is hard to steer sitting on the trailer.

looks like the transom lead a hard life and needs some attention before you spend any time or money on the rest of the boat. Bimond plate is not the fix for a rotted and broken transom.

Looks like it had a jack plate that was removed, now the cables are to long causing the kink. Need to find out how solid the hull is before doing to much.
