    Switching over....Oil compatibility???

Ok folks...got a 280 through the break-in period. Started out with Merc Premium (red dino), then gradually swapped over to Pennzoil Premium Plus to finish out break-in. Ready to go to full synthetic...Klotz Outboard Techniplate (KL333), to be exact.

I still have 7-8 gallons of the Penn/gas mix in the tank. Do I need to drain all of that first, or will it be ok to start pre-mixing the KL333 on top of it...starting with a completely full tank, of course? Basically, is the KL333 compatible to premix with that small amount of Penn PP premix?

Have used Penn full synthetic in the past, so I never considered the switchover to be an issue.

Please spare me the "should have stuck with Pennzoil" speech too.

Why risk it? I would drain the 8 gallons of fuel left and run it through another motor or a worn out lawn mower. I remember being at Merc service school years ago and the instructor really making a point about how important break in is and also how important sticking with one brand of quality oil is to the life of an engine. He called it "seasoning" the internals with a good oil and then staying with that oil. With that in mind, I would not mix it.

    No dissenting opinions here?

So, in your opinion, when I start breaking in another 280 that I'll be finished assembling in the next few days, if my heart is set on running KL333, then I should forget the idea of breaking in with dino oil and just start from fresh with the KL333?

Always break in on good quality petro oil. After that, stick with what has worked for you. I just would not mix the Klotz with the remaining gas/oil mix.

I agree that some oils may not mix well with others. You never know what type of a reaction or breakdown may occur with different additives and such used in oils. Drain, refill and run with your oil of choice.

If KL333 is TC W-3 rated, it will mix with any other TC W-3 rated oil.

If it is not, call Klotz and ask if it will mix.

Had not really thought of that.

    KL333 is TC-W3 certified.

I might do a little experiment to see if the two will mix.

I have already drained the tank though...just to be on the safe side.

One other thing...Klotz says to not mix richer than 50:1 when turning under 9000, which I shouldn't turn over 82-8300. Is this safe or should I stick to Merc's 32:1 standard?

Right off of the Klotz data sheet for KL-333:
"Compatibility: Blends with gasoline and stays in suspension. Will blend with petroleum oils and synthetic lubricants."

Ive swaped oil a few times and just mixeds some left overs. I had enough left to mix 20 gal 40-1 with Merc Premium pluss,Klotz, and Aylisn full synthetic. No problems at all tank is gone. I mixed all three together it makes no differance at all. I used to be paranoid of doing this also untill a very experianced 2.5 guy said its all just gas and oil. If its clean oil and gas it doesnt matter one bit mixing two differant kinds if they are all rated for that motor. Ive don this several times over the years on the same motor thats still running strong. The biggest thing is steel bore non synthetis and nick motors synthetic. Reason being the steel bores are more porious and Merc Premium pluss is not synthetic and can get in the poors better than the slipery Synthetics that should be used on smother nick finishes. Heat transfer laws are at play in a longer explanation also with the differant finishes. That synthetic I had I bought years ago and after the explanation of my steel bore motor I stopped useing it but on occation have been adding it a little hear and there to get rid of it. Its just Merc Premium Pluss 40-1 or 32-1 for my steel bore motor untill she dies now.

Ive heard some say like Jay for instance that 40-1 seems to be a good mix for any 2.5. If ya know your going to be running for longer streatches at higher rpm add a little more just for pieace of mind. I do that also. i dont run over 7000 rpm for more than a few miles and 7500 rpm only for 1/4 mile type bursts maybe a mile at the most that high. I run 40-1 99% of the mixes with 91-93 oct. I have been running Aces for the last couple of years but Im out! Ive been thinking of running some 32-1 just because Im going on my 6th year since the rebuild just to give the old girl a treat now and then. Give her some treats like 32-1 some times and see how she likes it? If she likes a leaner diet run 40-1 and skip the desert.

Jay, it's easier to find the Klotz around here than it is to find the Pennzoil full syn. Plus, I got a SUPER deal on the KL333....about $20/gallon shipped to me for 8 gallons.

    The Klotz smells better, too.
