An 88 is very mildly ported,so without a major teardown and machine work there's not too much to do.These motors respond well to our reeds, you will gain idle quality, efficiency, and better acceleration, maybe a little top end,it's a good upgrade for the money,Chris

The reeds are 80$, and bigger carbs will not help in my opinion...they will hurt bottom end and the intake and exhaust ports are too small for much improvement, chris

Damn so I'm stuck with what I got pretty much than right will drilling the exhaust right above the cav plate hurt it at least it will sound cool do u think a 22p raker will be to much for it to handle on a light 16' bass boat with a 6" jacker plate

Some bolt-on additions: You engine has low compression bathtub heads: get a set of high compression heads from an older V4, such as a 78/79 140. Upgrade to a set of 1 5/16" carbs-you may have to fiddle with the main jets-they will probably flow too much fuel. Have you ever rejetted carbs before? In the end, the carbs will be worth the effort. Composite reeds are nice. Helps idling and throttle pickup.

I turn mine 6100ish regularly but it is a 115 "bubbleback" which is essentially the old 135-140 and has better porting and tuned exhaust compared to your 88. I would think turning your 88 that high with its mild porting would be unecessary. You should be able to find a bubbleback powerhead pretty cheap and freshen it up and mount it on your mid for a substantial boost.
What year is your 88 and do you have power trim?Thomas

as these guys have said you should really try and get at least a 115 powerhead. preferably a 135 or 140 even. the 85 has lower ports than the 115-140 and would be that much harder to modify compared to a 115-140. the difference between the 115-140 is just bolt on parts mostly. here is a pic of a 115 block im working on. its getting the 135 exhaust stuffers and bubble back. with modified port outlets to more match the newer 140 as the stuffers inherently disrupt the port flow on two cylinders so you can see the upper right and lower left are cut open more. the bubble plate will be matched to them as well the gasket. as you can see i cut out the bridge in the exhaust cavity and eliminated 2/6 bolts which where in the exhaust cavity. im going to weld fill in some plates to smooth the flow through that area as well.
when you install the stuffers in a block that didnt come with them you have to flycut or "deck" the back of the block with the stuffers installed(holes drilled and tapped and bolted) this makes the whole surface flat and allows the stack of several gaskets and parts of the bubble back assembly to lay flat and seal against the stuffers and block. some one questioned this previous in a V4 mod build and this is the only way to do it right and block and powerhead must be disassembled for this process.
my mod build is also getting 1 3/8ths carbs and a programable CDI ignition with 2 spark plugs per cylinder modified heads. with coil on plug coils(no wires). lightened stock flywheel and stock ignition electrics minus CDI and coils.Last edited by Umassot50; 07-11-2011 at 12:51 PM.

That's some good information right there Umassot50, and a good looking build, let us know how it works out!
Back to xpressboat87, what is this bassboat of yours? Does it have a pad bottom? You described it as "light" and the term light and bassboat usually don't go together.Thomas
