May I Have Your Engine Opinion Please

What is the "right " engine for a 1983 Voyager XT?
I bought it with a 1984 Johnson 185 HP on it. It runs fine, but I am far from the potential. Also, repeating a mistake from my past, I bought a boat with a rare engine with hard to get parts. I guy who should know told me I should switch to a Mercury.
Considering it’s modest value , what would be the best motor for my boat?

60* looper or a 2.5 merc, just keep the weight down for good all around performance

I'm going through this right now trying to match a motor for my '83 voyager. I really want a 200xs optimax. Good performance and economy.

But from a price standpoint I think I'll hang a Merc 2.4 200 on it.

It just depends on what you want to do...

A friend of mine has a heavy lay up Voyager with 2.5 200 with a 260 front half, horned injection, runs 92.4, not bad for a bowrider!

Yor engine is not rare it,s the 185 designation that,s all, which is the prop rated 200 hp. for a couple of years . Also parts are plentiful and reasonable . You will have no shortage of torque thanks.

I would put a 2.4 or 2.5 merc on it. Yamaha 200hp and up motors run strong, very reliable from my experience as well.
