280 timing
I want to check the timing on my 280 but the flywheel cover is missing. Is it possible to check it without the cover or do I have to hunt one down?

You can make one with any type of pointer bolted to block, then you will have to know how to set it at TDC. You will need a piston stop. If you barrow a cover you will have to, and should, do that anyway!

If its stock electronics tha pointer isn't on tha cover. It goes under tha rear stud that holds tha cover. You set tha pointer and set tha air gap but thats all. Tha electronics take care of tha actual "timing". You can't change it. 260/drag lectrics on yours maybe? That goes back ta "old school"................

I set the air gap on the 280's I build @ .035" I loosen the retaining bolt on the trigger pick up ( 3/8" wrench ) then rotate the flywheel so that one of the timing "knobs" is directly across from the pick up. Next insert a LONG .035" feeler gauge in between the two surfaces, apply finger pressure behind the pick up until there is a slight drag between the "knob" the feeler gauge and the pick up tighten the 3/8" headed bolt down with red loctite applied . Next check the feeler gauge between the two parts, there should be a slight drag....
ALWAYS works for me !
