The service manual lists all the different jets with part numbers. Remember its a lot safer to start rich and work down. When checking you need to look at the piston not the plug and after a wot run shut down clean, idle time will change the color quick.

    Great discussion....very helpful
    I just purchased a 23 eliminator...has twin fresh rebuilt 89 Johnson v6's
The boat also came with an extra set of power heads, new pistons and 2.7 heads
The boat now runs 70@ 6000 with stock motors, 1/2 fuel and mazco re 14.5 x 28 props
Was thinking about installing the 2.7 heads on the stock motors to see the performance difference.
Becides running 92 pump gas....is there anything I should do in addition to the install or be careful of ?
Thank you, any advice would be appreciated

How high are running the motors? You might gain some more speed and rpms if you Jack the motors up some more.

Gathering info from threads on motor height....
This seems to be the most common starting position.
By looking at the motor bracket I do no have room to raise the motors unless I add Jack plates

Great info.....i just purchased a 1988 23' Eliminator with twin 1989 v6 225's. The boat came with a set of 2.7 heads. The motors now are stock rebuilds....im planning on putting the 2.7 heads on this winter. The engines now turn ave 6000+ wot I know I have to rejet carbs, they are 62 top and 65 bottoms now.....any suggestions what size would be best ?
    Thanks...B

Jets are way cheaper than Pistons!

Has anybody thought about plugging only the top 4 idle reliefs with the 2.7 heads and re-jetting all 6 carbs the same, (maybe +one on #2 cylinder)? Could it degrade idle or maybe preserve idle?

Or is having equal compression and running fatter jets on the lower 2 the way to go?

I'm about to build a 1997 Vindicator 200 for my SleekCraft that has low compression on #2. I already have big bore 3 screw carbs w/throttle bodies and 398269 2.7 heads on the way. And I plan to order Chris Carson 166S reeds. I did read in an earlier post that Chris did not recommend the 2.7 heads but the poster did not elaborate on why. I left a message with CCMS to call me back so I hope to hear from him soon.

He was a big help on my current engine:

The 97 is a close deck engine and the 2.7 heads are from an open deck engine. They cool differently and need to be modified to run on a closed deck block. Also its the open deck that run larger jets in the bottom, the closed deck took care of that with head chamber size and different cooling. They should have a larger jet in number 2.

Thanks for the quick reply on an old thread!!!

I now understand the 2.7 heads will need the Marine-Tex bridge mod to run on the '97 3.0 block. Since the 2.7 open deck heads don't have larger combustion chambers in the lower two, one would still need to jet up on 5&6 on the closed deck block correct?

The heads I bought are 398269 .675 chamber depth heads for the 200STL/TX, not 398268 .700s for the 225. This is a good thing I assume? And the heads I'm getting are new old stock, shown in 1st pic below.

My thought process was to plug the top four exhaust reliefs in the block and maintain lower compression in the bottom two and jet them all the same with +1 on #2. Or could this cause some sort of pressure imbalance? Does equal cylinder compression translate into better performance?

Otherwise I probably won't fill any of the reliefs and jet 74 on the top 4 and 76 on 5 & 6. I have no plans to work the block as I don't need a hot rod, just a fun boat :0)

From what I gather here is the Marine-Tex mod before & after:

THANK YOU ALL FOR SO MUCH INFORMATION OVER THE YEARS!!!
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

My new old stock 1986-87 200STL/TX 0398269 2.7 liter .675 heads showed up. I feel like they are legit and they look great. They are marked with "casting"? number 333108 and the number 490 on the under/piston side. I will need to do the Marine-Tex bridge cooling mod before running them in my 1997 E200STLEU. I will bolt them on and check compression before deciding on plugging the exhaust reliefs in the cylinder walls if at all.

I was also able to track down an intake manifold set from a 1987 E225TX, it's on the way:

I will also be installing a set of 0437326 carbs and throttle bodies.

My goal is to do the maximum with just bolt on parts and leaving the block alone.
I will need to decide if I should install Chris Carson reeds and modify the air box and then jetting will need to be sorted out but I'm thinking 75's on the top 2 cylinders, 74's in the middle and 76's on the bottom 2.
