Were your carbs rejetted rich, or stock it was rich? You always run 93 in your motor?

Before I bought my motor it had originally sunk under water. Barney from Action took the motor to Monty to repair everything that was damaged. While it was at his shop, he "cleaned up" the exhaust ports and re-jetted the carbs because the motor was going to be used strictly for pleasure boating. In other words, it was set up to be as reliable as possible. When I bought the motor it had 95-100 psi on all 6 cylinders. After a few years of using it like that, I bumped the compression up a few notches. Much better hole-shot and mid-range punch. I always run 93 in the boat now. I would occasionally run 89 before the compression bump but not anymore. I did blow my powerhead up once before I got the heads done but that was due to a restriction in one of the carbs. Since then, I have had zero issues with the block/rotating assembly. I have replaced the powerpack and one of the coils though. Not bad for over 7 years of abuse.

When you put the 2.7 heads on, do you plumb the thermostats like the older motor, or the same
as the newer motor. The older motor has the poppet valves incorporated with the thermostats. The newer style has the poppet valve in-between the thermostats. The older motor is plumbed from
the port stat, to the stbd stat, then it dumps out the bottom of the cowling. My motor has the
stats plumbed into the poppet valve. I can block off my poppet valve if it doesn't need to be used.

I'm not sure, I haven't pulled my mains out since I popped the motor years ago. I've got the boat stored at a family member's house until I move into my new place on the 11th. Once I get the boat back, I can check for you.

Just picked up 2.7 heads myself for a '98 225. I'm running 72D jets now, which are stock for this motor. The only stock size I am aware of that's bigger is 74D's, for the 250HP. Is that enough, or do I need something bigger? I assume you're not talking about the midrange jets, as going bigger would make it leaner.

No it's the high speed jets. In my motor they are 67d which are stock. If you read this entire
thread there are varying opinions on jetting, some say go up one for every 10 psi, there is a post
that says he never rejetted and has never had a problem. So I don't know. Some say you have to
run mid or premium gas, which is better any ways. My plan is to put them on and see where I'm
at with jetting. I've been told my motor is running rich as it is, it's on a small lite boat, where as it is meant to go on a much heavier boat. We'll see how it goes.

I'm running mine on a '79 Viking at 675lbs. dry. I just looked, and found bigger jets, but I'm pretty sure I'm running kind of rich now. Do you know where the idle relief ports are located?Any diagrams, or is it right in your face when you pull the head and the piston is on the downstroke?

Idle reliefs are little holes right over the exhaust ports that just bleed off compression at idle.

I just talked to Will Gross at Premier Marine, in Orlando. He says he can do the cooling mod for $150 if I strip the block. He says some work has to be done inside. What is your experience with this? I have a '98 powerhead. I really don't want to pull the block apart just to use these heads unless absolutely necessary. Thanks for the info on the reliefs!

I don't know what the cooling mod intails, I'm not planning on doing it. I've heard it's not a
necessity. But I'm not real sure. Keep posted with what you find out.
