Hmmmmm, the ability to SUCK IN WATER doesn't strike MERCURY RACING as a product defect. Below is a scenario I stated to Mercury when bringing this issue up.

Take in consideration this scenario : A guy with his wife and two kids are coming back from a fishing trip offshore of Florida. A quick rain storm pops
up a few miles from the inlet. Not a big deal, he has driven in the rain before and his electronics keep him on track. He gets to the entrance of the inlet
and the tide in is ripping out. As he gets halfway through the rough inlet, his TPS sensor malfunctions because it got wet from the wind and rain and throws a fault code to the motor. Boat loses power and is now getting swept towards the rocks. Tide is way too strong to power out of it with only " idle power". Before he has a chance for a distress call, the boat is smashed up on the rocks, wife and kids are thrown in the water only to be crushed by dads boat which was powered by a 300xs. An investigation finds that during these last few minutes, the motor recorded a fault in the TPS. Which in turn reduces power. Enough to even stall the motor. A motor that has had reported problems of ingesting water a fouling TPS sensors. Mercury is found liable and a 50 million dollar settlement is handed out.

I'm thinking there is vacuum comming off the back of the cowling
pulling the water up? How about some of those cavitation plate extensions
    to minimize the prop spray.

I can't say I really have a dog in this fight as I sold my boat however, I feel that anyone thinking about purchasing a Mercury should be aware. I know some of you have seen me idling back to the ramp because of a wet TPS... not fun. Even if this post prompts Merc to look into the issue
and re-design the cowling I have done someone good. I asked Mercury to send me two " Un-cut " cowlings. One for me and one for the gentleman who purchased my motor....below is the response to that

Clockwork, does the inside of the cowl have a water shield? I thought they did, so if you trim up all the way when boat is parked, water that comes in the rear port runs down to the pan's drain hole....

Regardless of any " devices " or additions made to the boat or motor, NO motor should easily be able to accomplish this. ( my fix was a zip-loc taped around the TPS ) What about guys who run in salt water..... what do their power-heads look like. Or even better, the inside ? Salt deposits on bearing surfaces, rings, cylinder walls?

NO water shield- Water comes in through the vent and dumped down both sides of the motor AND obviously sucked into the intake. It had sound insulation inside the cowl, I removed it from HOLDING water ( did not make a noticeable sound diff.)

A buddy from the Keys had a water dump shield made by a local fabricator in the Big Pine area that basically screwed on to the back of the lower cowl where the water dump is and directed water back and down . He had the same problem and I agree it should be standard equipment as a low pressure area will exist at the back of the engine .It was an inverted " U " shaped channel welded to a small plate that fastened on with two screws and presumably some type of RTV . Solved his problem .

That is a typical response from Mercury. The ol' "There is not a problem even though there is, and no we will not work with you to fix it because there is not a problem." At least with BRP there is some intelligence on the end of the phone line.

If mercury admits a defect then they would have to fix all of them?? Wouldn't a easy fix be a water-proof TPS?

That would cost a extra few $$ per motor and some bean counter would veto it .

Not if you boat in salt. The alternator is the first thing to get soaked

You can see my motor doing the same in my sig pic. I have to come with a solution as well.

I have seen this on a 32 Skater, when the boat came back out of the water, the engine was covered with salt water inside the cowl.
