250HO's gearcase
Hello
A friend of mine bought a 2011's model 250HO etec a few days ago and the gearcase on this motor is not the Lightning it's the other one with double pick up holes(1.85:1), is this normal?

Yes. They now come with the S.L.E. gearcase. This gearcase is bigger, stronger, and slower than the L2 it replaces.

Thank you.
Is this gearcase the same as 250 or 300 Etec's?

Got a call last Monday from BRP tech Services and they told me that anyone that has a 2008-2010 250H.O. with the L2 gearcase, they were offering free replacement and a free prop( because of the ratio difference) to go with the S.L.E. gearcase. Reason being I've Personally seen alot of L2 failures over the past 3 years. He also said you could expect to lose 1-2 MPH on a typical bass hull.

I ran a boat this past week with one, speed loss will be different depending on hull/set up. Boats that need positive trim like most bass boats and run in the 70 mph range 1-2 is expected, the faster more nuetral trim boats will have bigger difference

It Simply didnt work for Longevity...if you look at the failures on the 250 HO since 2008 you will see the news...The 200ho,225ho both get the L2 with New style gears from 2008 and 1:86.1 Ratio, so the 225HO is back to being a Killa......It should be interesting now with the Yamaha Shortage issues....

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but the 1-2 mph top end loss is not accurate. It is more like 3-6 depending on which bass boat you have. I have a 21 foot phoenix and lost 5 mph. Rangers los 2-3 mph. Stratos and basscat are in the 4-6 mph range. This is reality not internet BS. I will give you guys my numbers and you can run the slip yourself and see it is high. 74.5 mph @ 6200 rpms (on the limiter) 27 tempest plus. Figure it how you may but if you figure it by adding 1" for cup then its 16% slip without the extra one inch it is around 13%. This slip occurs over 70 mph on all the boaters I have talked with. The holeshot and midrange is excellent but the top end comes undone above 70. The new gearcase os mch more than just a different ratio, it is a tank with a blunt nose. I would love to see some of you scream and fly guys come up with a solution for this problem. I feel a larger diameter prop than the basic 14.5" is one thing to help as the gearcae is 1/4" larger in diameter. The gearcase always wants to be jacked way down, it just will not run good up high. The front needs new shape definately (nosecone somehow). So a combination of a proper propeller ( if it exists) that will grab cleaner water and also allow the motor to come up some to reduce drag; along with coning hte front to make it more hydrodynamic friendly and it may actually be a good overall case. If any of you on here have any clever ideas or suggestions please feel free to share. I know myself among several others in the bassboat world would love to incorporate your knowledge into our HO's to make them run again like they did with the L2. Thank you for your time, 10 years evinrude loyal complaining customer.

You would fair much better with larger diameter props on the L2 box. So your remark about larger props on the new box is right on the mark. I have a 225 HO with the 1.86 box and a 250 HO with the 1.71 box. My race boats would be much lighter than your fishing boats, and 14.5 inches is not enough diameter on my rigs.

I got a magnum case on my boat and didn't notice any loss over the old style case. I will trade a MPH or two for one that doesn't break, and it is way smoother then my old case. Mine is like Al said, need all the trim its got.
