Yeah Cmc drills there 5.5 jackplates 9/16 for some reason?
I pulled mine last year because the 1/2 bolts were letting my motors pull together. from turning my props in.
I bought the 9/16 stainless dowel and had them thread and weld a nut and washer on one end and thread the other. I would not use threaded rod.
I had a few extra made. I will see if i cant get you a pic.

How about going with a stronger grade of stainless like 17-4 preciptation hardening (PH) instead of more typical 18-8 or 300 series, I bet you can find the bolts you want in coarse thread.

Hunt and Ye Shall Find What You Want!
Go to www.pointe-products.com, in the search box select Bolts & Cap Screws, click on Bolts & Cap Screws, click on Hex Cap Screws Grade 8 (SAE) Fine thread, scroll almost to the end selecting item 06-15292, and there you will see 9/16"-18 X 5 1/2" Grade 8 Hex Head Cap Screw, $16.43 each. They also have a 6" version for $17.84 if you're not sure about the length. Ironically the fine thread nuts are available at most hardware stores.
Hope this helps.

I'd suspect a Grade 8 coated bolt would work fine, even in salt. I would not hesitate to use it as opposed to SS.
