why aren't you happy with the quicksilver oils? Smoke? From what I've heard, they're technically pretty good and at least a very safe option
Still, im interested too, subscribed

I would'nt use Royal Purple in a lower without an expansion bottle, and it just does'nt have the ability to hold water in suspension and it seems to expand a lot. Their 2 stroke oil is awesome.. except for the price.
Merc Hi-Perf gear lube is awfully tough to beat.
I've burned a ton of Pennzoil in the past two years in 9800 rpm motors and 5500 rpm motors and have nothing bad at all to say about it. And 16-22 bucks a gallon is a lot better than $40+ a gallon.
I still jones for the smell of Klotz though.

If your turning Merc Hi-perf black every fourth time out it's not the oil.

is there a way exhaust can get in there if a gasket is blown or somethin Capt? I cant imagine what would cause it to degrade so quickly in the gearbox

maybe try putting some engine oil flush in there with some new merc oil and take it for an easy run for half hour or so, drain and replace. Then see how it looks after another few runs. The flush could cause any old seals to start leaking tho

improper shimming, or if the guy used something like lubrimatic which has a lot of sulfer in it.

I get PennZoil at Menards. It's just under 20 for synth blend, about 26 for full synthetic. I've heard nothing bad about either. I use the full synth in a very well broken in XR4. Smokes a lot less than the Merc oil, and doesn't clog up the exhaust twice a year like the Merc oil did.
To fish or not to fish? What a STUPID question.
