More vintage race movies - Umbarger "Almost" and Parker Enduro

Here is another old movie. This one starts out with Jim Umbarger ALMOST blowing over his twin Chrysler powered Hustler boat at a race in Fox Lake, IL. The rest of the video is footage from the golden era of Factory backed tunnel racing. It's the Parker Enduro from around 1976 or so. Jimbo McConnell, Johnny Sanders, Geoff Briggs, Bob Hering...all the big names. OMC -VS- Mercury and throw in some of those awesome car motor powered ET tunnely hulls. This is my favorite race of all time. All the boats would take off and you'd place bets on who would be the first to come back around after circling the 13 mile course. Then they run that for NINE hours...

I'm still trying to figure out what's the best settings...this footage should be a little better. I'll try to redo it at some point to a higher definition setting, but you get the point. I also replaced the cheesy music with something a little better.

Nice. I knew most of the main drivers - i.e. #196 was Sanders number, #191 was Jimbo McConnell's, etc. I didn't know the co-drivers. Herring was FAST.

"Herring was fast", is an understatement! Bob Herring & Renato Molinari, completed 54 laps of the 13 mile long course, in 7 hours (not 9 hours) in 1975 (not 1976), for an average speed of over 100+ mph with a Mercury T-3, on a Molinari (what else!) That record has never been broken, nore will ever be surpassed and that was 35 years ago! 700+ miles in 7 hours! (don't forget pit stops for fuel & driver change!)

That's why I rely on experts like you. I was totally guessing on the year (not a bad guess to be one year off considering I was 7 at the time LOL). I also forgot that they had switched from 9 to 7 hours during the gas shortage (1973 or so). Thanks for filling in the informational gaps!

That first clip is awesome. Was the video taken from out front of Mineola?

Ding ding ding! You are correct. They used to have races there pretty regularly. The last race we had there was probably around 1983 or 1984 or so.

FMP...that's my father...1967ish. That was the boat he designed that started our company. He was high point champion and voted into the marine Hall Of Fame in that boat. Chrysler 105's with 1:1 gearcases. He then put the 105's on a 15' Hustler Wildcat for drag racing. Later went to 135 stacked Chryslers on a 19' Hustler . Fun times for sure.
