Winter is almost here. Time to think about all those faded and corroded accessories.

I have a three piece steel steering plate that I had powdercoated locally and it failed. Started to rust beneath the powder. I would like to have it redone but am not sure if is the powder coaters fault in poor prep or just the application Im using it for. Do you have the ability to stip off the old powdercoat. I tried to media blast it off but the only coating that came off is where it rusted. Thanks Mike

Yes I do have the capability to remove it via a chemical bath. If you are subjected to salt water (which I assume you are being located near Toms River). It should be soaked in a wash then baked to remove any impurities that have impregnated the metal. Bead blasted, and coated with a Corrosion resistant primer, then coated with the color of choice. A clear coat can be applied over that as additional insurance. I did the ladder on my Sea Ray coming from the water to the swim platform. To date no issues and it sees sandy feet, salt etc.

It's all in the prep when it comes to marine environments.

I have a lift that is Stainless and then needs to have its current four bolts replaced with Grade 8's. How does the process work on SS in Saltwater?

On any steel in a salt water application I first bake the metal to get rid of the impurities. I then do a hot coat epoxey powder coat base. Then I top coat with the final color. Stainless is no different if the customer wants stainless coated.

Thanks, would the fact that the lift had Grade 8's up against SS cause the powdercoat to give way at that location due to the two different types of metals? Or would you have to use SS bolts instead?

The different metals had nothing to do with the powder failing. I'd have to be able to do a eye ball inspection to speculate what happened. But If it were mine I'd use stainless fasteners in lieu of carbon steel.

I can say that I have called and talked to Bud on several occassions asking a multitude of questions concerning powder coating, about different colors, fading, Asked if there was a Chrome color to do some powder coating, every time I have called Bud has answered my questions fully, and has never rushed off the phone or acted inconvenienced in any way, even when I've asked the same thing over and over ( sorry bout that Bud ) Just wanted to say that I appreciate that type of service/ attitude, those are the things in my book that make a difference.
