    V 8 Gear case

What years and models of OMC interchanges for an 1985 V- 8 300 HP lower gearcase? It has a 20 shaft cw rotation and mechanical shift. Is it possible to get another brand lower geracase than OMC on it? Does the 1989 King cobra have the same gearcase? Any help would be appreciated. I have a great engine and a cracked gear case..... Must be some way to fix it?
    Thanks Jan

You can adapt a Merc Sportmaster to it, but it takes some doing.

Which of the V-6 cases will work? Does it have to come with a 20 shaft or will the one on the v 8 gear case transfer without problems? Is the V 6 Gear case available with a low water pickup? It currently has a nosecone with a low water pick up.

The V6 OMC case won't hold up for long with out extensive mods and kind water. Beat on it and it's a goner. But hey, give it a try!

While I haven't done it myself (my big ole fishing boat has CLE's on the bottom of it's Monty V8's), my dad and brother have been running a 6 case on an 8 for quite some time now. Smaller boats, Actions, and the like, but still...

That is cool Keith. I have had enough problems with a V6 case on a V6. Both of mine are pinned and one has the carrier sleeved.

What year V-6 would work? Is it the same splines on the shaft? Is there a difference in prop shaft diameter?
