I was at the shoot out all weekend, The playcraft is a 27 ft tritoon with 1200 h/p. The owner lives up here on the chain of lakes in IL. His 1st pass was 97 mph and 3 consecutive 100 mph passes in a row. The tripple south bay tritoon has (3) 300 x, tight heads, race gas, lite flywheels, his first pass was also 97 mph and 2nd was 100 mph. He did not back up his speed, so Ken Goudy still has the record. Way kool !!! The fastest boat was a 50' mystic tunnel, he ran 208 mph. This is 1 event every boater should see live. 1 Mile course, from a rolling start.

Was this like an unlimited distance shootout? Sounds really cool though.

Me neither. It just seems like a waste of a good motor to me. The boats have the aerodynamic characteristics of a freight train and they just look dumb going fast. I suppose you could make anything go fast but there are some things you really wouldn't want to.

On my lake there is a Manitou dealer that sells "high performance" pontoon boats. They do have a larger center pontoon and they will actually plane out but with a 250hp Etec they only get into the mid 40's which people think is fast. Not to mention they get horriible mpg's.

I love to blow by these guys in my Hydro at about 80.

This shootout is a 1 mile run with a 30 or 40 mph start. There is a radar gun at the 1 mile mark for the speed readings. Several guys were having problems getting a good reading on their boats. According to the throttle man in the Nautimarine boat, they were showing 217 mph on the gps, and several others were seeing pretty big differences in their speed readings. Either way, there were some fast ass boats there.

A boat made to go fast is an impressive combination of engineering and physics, I have a much greater appreciation for a boat that can go 100mph with an inline 6, than a massive chunk of metal with 10,000 hp, that is my only argument.

Having spent a little time with a radar gun in my hand I can tell you that they are always going to read a little slow unless the target is coming directly at you at the same altitude. The further off to the side or above the water the gun is from the target, the slower the speed that is recorded. You can also "cheat" with a radar gun. Any movement of the radar gun toward the target will show an increased recorded speed and visa versa. You can squeeze a couple extra MPH out of a target my pushing the radar gun toward the oncoming target as fast as you can.
I don't know how the Shootout mounts their radar gun but any movement ie. if its rocking in some waves or swinging from a cable will effect the recorded speed. The boats pilot should pick a course as close to and parallel with the direction the gun is pointing.

I gotta go get my boat up to about 80mph now and throw the GPS forwad into the bow area

Well that's a bunch of BS from someone who has never been on one.

I spent last week on a tripple toon Manitu with a 175 E-tec and it wil go most of 40 with 8 people on board. We ran the inland waterway in Michigan from one side of the state and back with less than 1 tank (24 gallons) of fuel. The same boat with a 250 E-Tec wil run in to the mid 50's with a light load.
