mercury 2.4l high water pressure after I installed water pump kit.

Hello everyone, I installed a water pump kit yesterday on my 1988 2.4l 220 (converted to carbs). I had around 5psi of pressure at idle(1000 rpm) and about 15-20 psi at full throttle (6000 rpm) before the new pump kit. I thought I would install a new pump kit, just for general maint. I now have 15+psi at idle on the hose. The water pressure gauge will drop to 12-15 psi when the poppet value dumps . When the pressure drops, at the same time a small amount of water squrits from the poppet value cover . The water is comming from what I think is a weep hole in the cover. I am not sure but I think water comming from the weep hole would indicate a leak in the poppet diaphragm or gasket. The thermostats are less than year old. The water comming from the pee hoses is not all that much. I can tell the thermostats are opening just not all the way?? I am still pretty new to outboards. I greatly appreciate any help. Thanks again.

High pressure means a restriction somewhere. Usually, water out the weep hole is a bad diaphram, but your so high, it may be too much for the diaphram to hold back.

Did the water tube pull out when you changed the pump?

I just checked the scale on my pressure gauge. 15psi is as high as it goes. Sorry about the wrong info. It reads 15+ at idle and around 12-15 when the poppet dumps. Isn't this still a little high? Thanks.

Hey, I think so too. I am just not real clear on what the poppet does ? Will replacing the poppet lower the pressure? Is 15psi at idle with a new impeller too high? Thanks again.

15 lbs doesn't sound that bad for a new water pump with the thermostats closed. The poppet regulates water pressure in the block. It should hold more like 20 to 25 lbs. at full throttle.

Thanks US1, I think the water pressure is overcoming the weak poppet spring and dumping the water before it reaches a high enough temperature to fully open the thermostats. I will put a new poppet kit in tomorrow. Does my theory make any sense. Thanks again .

Hey , When I pulled the old impeller everything was there. I checked the reverse flow of water while I had the lower unit out.I also checked with air after the lower was installed. The water as well as the air drained from the block unrestricted . I talked with mercury tech/parts dealer that I buy parts from. He as well as US1 said 15psi with a new pump kit was not crazy high for my motor. I may be overreacting a bit, but when you go from 5psi at idle to 15psi. I thought I better be sure and ask some that knows. As usual scream and fly members help me out again. I do have a leak in the poppet diaphragm. I bought a poppet kit today, I will install it tomorrow and post results. Thanks again.

Hello, I installed poppet kit today. The old diaphragm was shot. I now have 12 -15 psi at idle. The thermostats are opening with good water flow. I have not tested in the lake. I will do that this weekend. Thanks for all the help.

Everything went well. Great water pressure from idle to wot. Thanks S & F.
