    stock merc midsection cut to 15inch?

    i have a stock 20inch merc midsection i would like it cut to 15inch including drive shaft, shift shaft, and t arm

    check with chris carlson marine I had talked to him last year about it.

    If you have the 3 ram mid it can only be cut to a 16"

    Stock castings are too thin, they end up cracking. You need to use a thicker offshore casting.

    Transomstand, i have heard the same thing about the stock casing and always wondered: if it is thick enough to be a 20, why can't it be thick enough to be a 15? Not trying to argue because that is my understanding too, just trying to learn. thx,

    My assumption would be, the heat changes the alloy somewhat, possibly making it more brittle, and prone to cracking.

    This is a little off subject......can a single ram swivel offshore mid be put on a 3 ram swivel......

    If you don't have the 2K on hand for a used factory 15" mid., cutting one down is an option. As mentioned on every thread pertaining to cut down kids, using a standard bass leg is prone to cracking sooner or later, even if its done "right." We've been breaking them since the early 80's.

    i would love to see some pics of a cut down one , id love to cut an offshore mid i have down, im a fabricator but ive never cut down any mids id like to see whats really involved before i start playing with the project...
    Hope for the best, expect the worst...
