    Hull Mods Glastron Carlson CVX-16

    Hello.
I´m in the process of tearing down my CVX to replace stringers, floor, transom and everything else made of wood.

Should I make any modifications to the hull when I have the boat in pieces?
Some people say they will chine-walk at a little higher speed.
There is a small pad on the hull but it is a bit lower on the left side, is this correct?

When I`m done I will try to get rid of the crossflow 90hp I have now and get a OMC looper and a jackplate.

really depends on what u want to do with the boat. just finished adding a 9" wide flat pad and extending the inner (closest to center) chines all the way to the back of hull. the boat planes much quicker like this, IMO u really need center steering to take advatage of it. i'm running a 2.0l 150 Merc, i've only run it 2 times since i completed it, but it is definately faster. it's alot of fiberglass work to do theses mods, but i'm very pleased with the results on mine. Nothing supports weight like a horizontal surface ,A Pad would be a good starting point the width on my 17' Footers I used a 8" impulse pad and it could work up to 10" .

Solid engine mounts, properly adjusted dual cable or hyd steering would be the first things needed. Does not matter what you do to the hull if the steering is loose your going to have chine walk. Set back and engine height are also important.

    Thanks for the replys.
I am installing hydraulic steering but since I´m tearing it down anyway so why not do these mods in the same time.

Extending the chines all the way back sounds like a good idea.
If I build a larger pad should it be level or should it lean a bit like the original one do?
Should I build a pad under the hull or make the flat section of the hull larger?

TahitiDave, do you have a picture of your pad?

ID:	211747pics came out backwards. second pic shows chines already extended, first pic is the pad before i glassed it. i'll send finished pics when i get then loaded on the computer. and yes, everything needs to be squared (level) from the bottom of the hull going up. i've seen many top decks that were not square or level, so start from the bottom up and make sure your gearcase is at a 90 deg angle to the bottom of the pad (and centered)

    Thanks TahitiDave.
How long is your pad? It looks longer than the pads I seen pics of on other boats.
Is it level with the hull all the way to the front?
If you take a picture straight from the side I love to se it.

I´m keeping the driver seat on the starboard side. Would I benefit from this pad or should I just extend the chines?
I plan on doing some casual waterskiing behind this boat.
I will try to find a Evinrude Intruder 150 or Johnson Faststrike 150 instead of a V4 since there is not much difference in weight so the boat should handle it.

    Thanks for the help.

ID:	211814thats the best side view i could find, but if u r going to use it for skiing, i would only extend the chines. it will be more stable. i built mine for speed (me and my knees r too old to ski any more, lol!!) u r right, my pad is long, i'm not an engineer, so i wanted to make sure i wouldn't have a "bowsteer" situation if something goes wrong at speed. the measurement actually came from a friends Hydrostream V-king! when i get it all figured out i'll let u know some #'s. also, no matter what u do with it, build it good and be safe!! Dave

    I understand.
Then I will extend the chines only. When i bought the boat I was wondering why the inner chines don´t go all the way back.
I don´t have much experience driving faster boats so I don´t plan on flying across the water.

Dave. How did you make the original pad level, or was yours level from faktory. I will take a picture of mine some day. Mine is definitely not level.

the original pad should be level and flat. the bottom of mine was actually in pretty good shape when i got it, and yes, it was level and flat. although it's not a very large surface, if it's not level, it may make the boat pull to one side and not ride level.

Wierd that mine is not level like yours. I will take a better pic of mine when I have the motor taken of.
You can see it in this picture but not really good.
