Seahorse and Johnboy have your answer,we run lots of different yamahas in the shop,it is very common for the horn to sound after a couple of minutes on the hose, not clear on why,but it's a fact.Your running the risk of that brass hub spinning loose though,I wouldn't use anything but a factory impeller, and try a water test, chris

Most of the newer Yamahas with the built in flush attachment, I use the hose on that and also muffs on the gearcase so it has water coming in from both, this is the only way I have found to to them cool on a hose especially the new big 4 strokes. And you WILL chase your tail if you are trying to find a cooling problem while running on a hose. Get it in the water.

OK thanks for the usefull replies. I'll :

    - reinstall the new original Yamaha impeller
    - check thermostats (again)
    - check poppet valve (didn't do that yet)
    - testrun in a tank or on the trailer in water

I hope afterwards we can finally hit the open waters... It would be the first time this year.

I didn't know overheating alarms while running on the hose are a common problem, as I never experienced this with my Evinrude 140hp. As I compare my rude with my Yam, the Yam engine block feels warmer, so I am a bit suspicious and carefull u see... I'm gonna wait with the infrared heat measurement, but it's a nice test to do. Maybe I can borrow that equipment from the electrical department at my dayly job.

I also didn't know the pisser on my Yam is 'cold' water before it enters the powerhead. Indeed an important difference with that Merc cooling water layout I've posted. Still, my cooling water ray got warmer, which must have a logical explanation...
Does anyone have the cooling water layout of my Yam ? That would be very usefull...

Thanks again for the replies ! I'll keep you posted on the results.

It is in the service manual. I don't have mine here, unfortunately.
