mine are already drilled from the factory 5, 1/2 in holes on each side the motors are obnoxious at cruising speed you can hear them for miles yet register 84 db at idle. your method sounds great but i'm not going to cut pieces off the mid. cool job tho.

    EXHAUST ENHANCING

I AM NEW TO THE BOARD
    I HAVE A 1998 MERC 3.0L 200 HP
IM LOOKING AT THE POST WOULDN'T ONE JUST BE ABLE TO DRILL SOM 1/2 " HOLES UP FROM THE BOTTOM AND CALL IT GOOD FOR A LITTLE LOUDER EXHAUST TONE. LIKE SOME OF THE ONES THAT DID IT FROM BEHIND. IT WOULD BE LESS NOTICEABLE FROM UNDER NEITH AT IDLE AND LOUD ON PLANE
CORRECT?? DOES THIS HELP OR HINDER PERFORMANCE AT ALL?

    SHEP358...

Sorry, you can't drill up from the bottom without drilling thru the cav plate too (not a good idea)... plus, you need to remove the inter liner (can) so that the newly drilled exhaust holes have a purpose! A good time to install solid mounts as well...

To take advantage of the relived exhaust mod, you need to do other perf. work (heads milled, velocity stacks, reeds, rejetting, etc.) to gain any noticable horsepower or RPM... otherwise it's just noise. Jim.

Skip, been 4 years now, is that long enough?

IMHO, this sounds just as good if not better than the OS dump. Ive done it to two motors so far.

It's louder than an offshore dump, that's for sure. Just ask the author of this thread. Side by side, his 2.5 offshore dump, next to my 2.4 with the mid seen here in this thread. He could here mine over his.

i think from behind the OSD is louder, but from the front possibly the modded one. maybe due to the way the exhaust echos down off the water? also, the pitch of the OSD is deeper, making it not sound as loud. both sound badass though.

Can this mod be done with the motor on the boat or do you have to pull it off the boat to tear it down.

Is there any gains besides the noise
