Torque Master lower unit ID?
I have a 1998 Mariner Super Magnum 225, I assume the same as a Mercury Pro Max 225, that I am having to replace the seals in the lower unit. Since I bought the engine used, Is there any way to identify the lower unit? I assume it is a torquemaster and not the sportmaster since it has a Bob's nosecone and lwp. The oil drain plug is also under the propshaft. The lower unit does have some #'s on it...U97K1866 and a casting # 847610-0. Just want to make sure I get the right seals.

Torquemaster Traits
In addition to the oil drain being located below the propshaft on the bearing carrier, 2.5 litre torquemaster gear cases also have:
* Only 4 water intake holes per side
* A cast boss approximately 1 inch in diameter located approximately 4 inches directly above the water intake holes. The boss is drilled and
tapped for a water intake when a nosecone is installed.
* Skeg is cambered on the trailing port side edge to minimize
steering torque when running the engine high.Any fool can make something complicated - it takes a genius to make it simple.

seal job
prop shaft seals (2) are same as Sporty or late CLE for 1 1/4 dia shaft
carrier oring seal use the red one
water pump stuff is all the same except Sporty has a 3/4 in let on top part on water pump housing which you wont have if its stock stuff off TM
pro marine is oh so much cheaper then MERC on these things prop shaft seals from Merc are jaw clinching numbers for what you get

Thanks for the help. You are right on the Merc prices...A couple of prop shaft seals plus shipping will set you back around $50!

TTT..........
I was aware that the [B]2.5[B]Torquemaster has 4 side inlet holes but are they actually lower down the housing? Also, the skeg on the 2.5 TM I picked up seems strange. It is almost like it is bent but I have never seen a 2.5 TM lower unit until now. Attached is a picture, does anyone recognize this skeg or is it in fact just bent?

torqmaster
the boss on the left side of the pix is where you drill out for the water transfer tube it has them on both sides the others are vent for shift shaft and over flow. its the only case with the boss's in 2.5 class in my opinion its the best case to cone then it turns in to the best coned case on the water

Thanks TEXAS20225,
Here are two better photos of the skeg. Seems to run just fine, but when I look at how straight my Sporty's torque tamer is I just can't figure it out. Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

its got a little tweek in it but not enough to worry about. not much of a way to fix it without hydraulic press equipment and some body who knows how much to push and when to stop i have straightened them out with heat a big hammer but im cautious about beating on a torqmaster its hard to find them when replacing someones you destroyed

Thanks guys, I will have to get some play-do from the kids to highlight the bend of the skeg better. It really does look like it was bent which is why I am so concerned. Not looking to end up at the wrong end of the lanyard. It would be good to see some other pics of the same lower. Also, mine has a blow out ring just like my TM. Let me know Dave, H2O and Texas if your lowers also have a blow out ring as well?
