    OMC lower unit change?

    One more time....What year did OMC update/change the lower unit? '92?

    Which change are you referring to? drive shaft length was in 92 except the 60 degree V6 was in 91, V8 shaft length did not change

    Speaking primarily about V6...the lower unit design was changed...it sure helped if one was running the foot high relative to the boat and a surfacing prop...the old style had a big snap ring (lack of a better way to describe) and the recess machined into the foot to receive the snap ring created an area that would crack under the severe duty loads. I think lower unit change happened in early '90's but not sure of the year. The drive shaft length changes you mentioned may be an indicator of when the foot change was introduced on the different models...but maybe not. I would like to get this committed to memory once and for all.

    92 up had the larger prop shaft with a new retention on the carrier but I would still cross bolt it.

    I'm confused on the V4 driveshaft length thing. Will an 84 gearcase work on a 95 motor or is the shaft too long?
