    96 200hp carbed Merc .. thoughs pls

on the verge of buying this engine.
what i would like to know is:
-does it have the repulation of being solid and reliable?
-easier and cheaper to fix than efi's?
basically, anything you can tell me about these engines is MUCH appreciated. going to put deposit on it tonight.
    oh .. is $3200 a good price?
getting comp test and leak down down in the next day or two.
thanks in advance ... MUCH appreciated from this newbie!!

this motor has old ignition (style)stator/switch box. good in my oppinion. pretty reliabile.
    boxes do fail though.
is oil injection hooked up? if so mabe change sensor and bearing(houses rotational magnet) for warning system..
this model year merc changed the reed cages from 5 t0 4 petals...(i dident like)
    4 many reasons!
also this year model they put compression release in the exhaust ports!
overall these engines were good and reliable.
like all things with time u will possibily have to replace componets.
id give a little less in the price!

Good solid engine. You'll find a mix of 4 and 5 petal reed blocks in 92. The change started in 92 with the EFI motors and continued through 95. By 96 most all were 4 petal. I've run both and I think I prefer the 5 petal. Easy enough to change so don't let that hold you back.

3200.00 might be a little high but if it runs well and checks out maybe it's in line. Look for salt.. If there's any evidence it will be around the lower mounts, the swivel pin yoke and the power head mounting bolt nuts.

If you find it, point it out and offer them 1,000.00 less if it's in otherwise perfect condition but only if it's perfect. You'll know why if you ever have to tear it down.

If you see a lot of red rust and white corrosion look for another motor no matter how well this one runs.

    thanks for the info!
the engine has been run only in the muskoka region in ontario canada so salt wont be an issue.

the compression test was run today and was 130 to 135 all around.
i am going up tomorrow to do a visual with the mechanic.

so essentially, these are solid reliable engines?
that is waht i am most concerned about.
i wish i lived in the states ... engines are soooo much cheaper there, alteast from what i have seen online.

oh .. and the origonal asking price was $3500 .. so i did get it down a bit.
i have to admit .. i dont know what 4 or 5 reeds are. i really only know what i have read, so super green when it comes to outboards. right now i am the type to put gas in and drive. hoping that will change with help from everyone here!

    96 200

2800 to 3200 is going price in my neck of the woods.VERY good motor they are big exhaust ramp 2.5 with wmv5 carbs top of the line IMHO leak down and comp before you buy it , after that lose the oil injection caused a lot of trouble for a lot of boaters it aint worth it premix your fuel there are NO exhaust relief notches in these 200's only one or two years in the early 90's had them! 150's have them and some 175 but not this model you'll be happy if comp and leak down are good and its in good shape
