I found that the riding mowers HP dropped like a rock when the EPA made them put lean-burn carbs on them and all other power equipment too. My Echo blower and Trimmer need 10 minutes of warm up time before they make any power, even since new.

I you look now, a lot of manufacurers are puting the CC measurement on them instead of the HP rating that way they can't be held liable for the "lack" of claimed HP. Because no matter what happens other than catistophic failure the CC measurment will not change.
Pretty soon almost all the small engines will be from the same manufacturer anyway...MTD, which owns B&S and is going to drive the others out of business (except for honda...maybe.) then make all there crappy motors in china.

I had just bought a new sears mower with a 28 hp briggs on it. Purchased it on the 10th of april and the time limit for purchase is the 12th. With this new one I will have three mowers covered under this lawsuit. I am not really wanting to get something for nothing, and have some reservations about this lawsuit. I just feel this is going to make it even harder on some American companys and their employees. A sign of the times I guess.....Hard decision for me...

My golfcart was lean after I hogged the airbox out, took the main out and used a torch tip cleaner on it....lol, it was all good after that.
Well, at least they got rid of most of the flathead small engines....you know, the ones from the 40s or whenever it was they designed them....and it took Japan to force them out. On the other hand, B&S just hired them to design the vanguards they were so inept."As government expands, liberty contracts." -Ronald Reagan

Riding mower basics
I will probably have to buy a riding mower for lawn mowing season.
Approximately 6000 square meters to mow.
Please take me through the basics of lawnmowers so that I understand what to look for, e.g.
1. Front-mounted versus mid-mounted
2. Different types of steering
3. Minimum widths and hp
4. Hydrostats (?)
The brands are probably different here, but the technologies should be the same...Markus' Performance Boating Links:

Jay your wife mows the lawn and your complaining about a lawn mower!!! I bet its still cheaper than having someone else mow it plus ya cant hear her complain over the hum of the motor. Sounds like a win win to me.

I deal with this daily. The easiest way is to go off of CC's. Honda has been bad at over rating their engines for a while. We've been noticing that for a while in commercial pressure washers.
Anywho, I'll try and find a chart for CC to HP conversion.-Dustin

I had a friend who gave me a almost new mower after he signed on with a lawn service, the Briggs engine screwed up after half a season. I paid $50 more for a new mower with a Honda, runs perfect for 5 years already. No more Briggs for me,ever.
