    Shadow 21

Posting some pics of this boat to get insite as to what someone can do with this. I hate to junk it out and would like to see what someone can do with it. Let me know if someone needs this or what it can take to get it back up again.

Looks like a night mare but once all the crap is out and its stripped totally ground out and cleaned theres a good base to start with . Need a big shed and lots enthusiasum and plenty of now how and you could make a nice boat out of it .

You should try repairing a 36 ft sail boat with a good 80% of one side missing and all the interior hanging out and dripping wet !!.

Messing round with boats is fun !! the learning never stops ,even after more than 30 years there's always something new happening somewhere ! BUT somethings never change and some problems never go away and just keep reoccurring !!so moved into Composite Forensics , Now that something completely new !!

Haven't done anything other than wash it out and shooting these pics. Are you guys thinking that the cracks are just in the gelcoat? I looked underneath the cap at these points and couldn't see any fraying of the glass. Can the gel be ground out and resin be applied to rebuild to the correct hieght if the glass is OK? Also, what is the best way to see the condition of the balsa without doing more harm than good. I am going to remove the plywood the best I can and get to the stringers because I know they are probably gone. The best I can do at this point is to determine how far to the bad it is, so maybe someone can save me from taking that too far.

    That poor old Shadow!

I'd guess those are just stress cracks in the gelcoat. There are a couple ways to fix that, someone more knowledgeable than I will probably respond. Vnemous ground them out with a Dremel, if I remember correctly, then filled with epoxy before painting.

Hey, if you get the chance, could you get a close up pic of that bow light? My Shadow doesn't have an original one and I'm curious as to what they look like.

I just went on the upper (sides) where it is cored with a rubber mallet and everything seems solid, inside and out. The front plywood bulkhead under the deck is in great condition. as is the underside of the deck itself. Should I drill into these areas to see if the balsa is wet or is this not a good practice? Also, are the center parts of the floor where the seats mount wood encapsulated in glass? I see that the are glassed in at the sides, but are they supported by and glassed onto the stringers on each side of the fuel tank?

    Pics...

Here are the pics of the core on each side of the hull and front bulk head, all under the bow deck. I doesn't seem to look all that bad to me.

Loop looks to be TIG welded on. If it is hard to find, maybe you could use a common stainless housing with similar overall appearance and have a 3/16 or 1/4 stainless bar stock added. That may have been what they did in house, but with as many as were built of various models there may be a replacement style somewhere out there. Good luck!
