    Hydraulic Steering Problem

I've got a seastar system on my deck boat that is slipping/skipping???????While running and and trying to left against the torque, steering will skip and not turn boat. the same feeing as if there was a gear in the helm that was stripped out. Anyone ever experienced this same issue. Just need to know if I've got helm problem, cylinder problem or air/fluid issues.

    Thanks in advance

    Scott

Yes, it's air cycling through the helm. Have it power bled or go through the bleed procedures about a dozen more times. I've got the SeaStar Pro Helm and it did the same thing. I took the route of running a couple of more quarts of fluid through it during repeated bleeding and I don't have the problem anymore.

It is either air in the system, have you had it apart recently? If so you need to bleed it again. As stated previously power purging is the best way.

It could also be sticking check valves in the helm, caused by age / contaminated oil.

    steering

never had it apart but it has been sitting all year. Do you have to power bleed it or can you do it the standard way?

You can bled it the standard way. Powerpurge makes it a one person job and you are certain to remove all of the air..

Take the helm out put it on a bench and take the backplate off. If it has any kind of rust, pitting or debris in it you are probably going to need a new helm. Had to do this to a customers Hydrostream that was doing the same thing. Contaminates accumulate in the helm.
