have to pull off powerhead
Ah crap! I did my annual two year impeller replacement on my 200 hp efi. Have done this 3 times with no problems. lower unit came off fine, pump went on fine. Started to reinstall lower unit. Found it impossible to put back on, because of a bearing or seal obstructing the powerhead threads. Gonna have to pull powerhead and see what needs replacing. Anyone have this happen before? Also after I pull and fix powerhead, should I install my lower unit first , then try and align powerhead, or should I re-install powerhead , then reinstall lower unit. Seems to me it would be better to install my lower unit first while the powerhead is off, then put powerhead on. Any suggestions appreciated

Yep the part that holding the drive shaft male spline from entering the crankshaft female spline is called a Carrier Assembly part number 54196A6 It taps onto the bottom of the crankshaft spline and its got a rubber gasket in the internal part and sometimes they become dislodged and creates the "issue" you are having now ( they block the opening to the female spline on the crank ) ...You might can sharpen a wooden dowel and move the rubber ring in alignment with the crankshaft spline opening..
Just a thought!

Jay; I'll look at it closer today, but it looked like the whole assembly fell down.

If you can remove it 1/2 the motors I get in here don't have them installed. I order them by the dozens and install before they leave BUT no telling how long they have ran without them just fine...

Sometimes you can get them out with a piece of welding rod with a hook on the end. Mine came out that way.

That's what it was; the carrier assembly had dropped off. I spent some time trying to get it out but of course the assembly ring is bigger than the hole in the midsection. found a 1/2 inch long pipe to tap it back on the bottom of the crankshaft spline. It seemed to tap back on the crankshaft spline ok. Im sure I can now reassembly my lower unit without pulling the powerhead but my question now is ;before I reassemble the lower/should I try and leave the assembly on or should I try again and get it out alltogether. Any thoughts??

Thanks Jay & Steve!!
Finally got the carrier assembly out! Of all things, I used a manual sprinkler turnoff rod, bent the end into a small hook. Amazing how easy the lower unit slid on then. Definitely didn't want to pull powerhead. Thanks again for the Info!!!!
