Rabco Magnun Missle
Hey guys,
I am new to outboards. I have had hot 454/bravo in a 23.6 rinker (70mph), and 3 or 4 inboard ski boats. (35mph)
I feel the need for speed again.
I found a Rabco Magnun Missle with a 2.4 merc bridgeport. can anyone give me some info of stuff to check?? It "needs maintenance"
How fast will this boat go?? how fast safely??
If the motor has good compression, is it a good motor? how much should the compression be?? What the heck is a bridgeport? How much HP is a 2.4 merc? Is it a v6 or i4?
See, I am new to outboards, but this boat looks fast with its total tunnel hull.
Thanks
kevin

Welcome to Scream and Fly Kevin.
Many people, INCLUDING ME, think the Magnum Missle is a death trap with a V6. While it's true that some people have run them successfully, MANY have been blown over. This boat was designed when a 135 inline 6 Merc (rated at the powerhead, probably only about 110 in today's ratings) was about the hottest thing you could buy. The boats have a lot of lift designed into the tunnel to pack air and just aren't safe at anything over mid 70's speeds, and can be blown over even at those speeds with an unexpected change in wind.
They're neat boats from a collector's standpoint, but in terms of function are completely obsolete by today's standards and especially with today's power options.Membership upgrade options: http://www.screamandfly.com/payments.php

Yup, thats it!! I am more concerned with If it runs rather than it going too fast!! I do not want a project. Is the Bridgeport dependable????
I think any small boat is unsafe at 70mph. I have read on this site of at least 2 DEATHS caused by this boat!!
For 4-6 grand this seems like a good choice to 1) carry 4 people 2) go in salt water 3) get the speed rush of 60 plus mph.
I am not a racer, but my inboard skiboat only goes 35-40 and I am bored!!
ya'll are cool and very informative.
thanks
Kevin

rite guys, gill was a good friend, he had the rabco touching tripple digits, watched him drive that boat a few times ,testing out of my neighborhood.what really got to me was that a hi school buddy ,jimbo boggs bought that rabco brandnew . he got too happy with the trim one sunday & died from his injuries, that was a couple years before gill got ahold of the boat. if you put any v6 on it ,,be CAREFULL!!!!

With the multitude of decent handling V bottoms and modified tunnels on the market, why take a chance on an old boat with a bad reputation? There are also structural concerns as these boats had weak transoms. The two that were in my area both had the transoms crack and seperate with inline six's. Markus is correct. Unless your DNA is radically different than the rest of us, you WILL want to go faster.

Here's a question, the bridgeport's a nice motor. It might be worth it for him if he gets it cheap enough to get a newer safer tunnel, throw the motor on it and sell the older hull??
Just thinking out loud.

Magnum
all this CRAZY talk gives me WOOD...I'm takin my MISSLE out tomorrow...I need a good thrill a minute ride, besides I got some new props to try, if your not livin on the edge ...buy a pontoon boat or stay home on the porch...I have had a bunch of these boats and never got hurt YET, I stuffed one once..that woke me up, I always ware my jacket and pay attention and respect my instincts...confidence not carelessness leads to a great day SUNNY SIDE UP...I'll be out with my buddy and his VELOCITY, I used to beat him with the BIG MOTOR, now with the XR-4 I'm going to have to lean on it, this should be interesting at best...His VELOCITY , carb 280 spec motor runs 80+, he told me he put another 2.5 pro max motor on it now, how fast can that be??? hope i'ts calm out.......

Well we went out today BEAUTIFUL DAY, and NO I didn't beat the VELOCITY, still too much prop with this little motor, only ran 62mph at 5500 rpm, it's a big diff what 100hp makes...tried 26p, 24p next step 22p, attitude of boat is good, just short on hp w/ stock 150 xr-4 ...the VELOCITY ran 77.8 on GPS...all in all great day, had lunch at SUNSET CAFE and boogyed on home, nothin broke...
