    Almars Outboards

    Any dealings with these guys?

Had a long talk with them at the boat show, they specialize in new, used and re-manufactured mercs. Prices were reasonable, warranties and they appeared to have it together.

Ok,Let me tell you my story about them.....They had a great price in the ad I saw on a 250xs. So they told me they wouldnt sell me the motor unless I let them install it.Also there would be no warrenty if I didnt let them install it.That it had to be installed by a mercury dealer.I told them another local shop would do the work for $500.But then they told me that he was not a mercury dealer(he is). Then they told me they wouldnt sell me the motor. Why should I pay $1500 for a simple hook up...........

In his defense, his dealer contract does not allow him to sell the engine in the box. As long as an contracted Merc dealer is doing the install, he will sell you the engine. They will note this on the contract. That gets them off the hook with Merc. Almars will warranty register the engine, We have done alot of installs for them in the last 10 years and have agreat working relationship. He has great prices and is usually the number one or two dealer in the country.

They have been in business a long time. That said I don't know who is there now. Alot of people go to them in that there is no sales tax. They were at one time very straight shooters and I think alot of the price breaks come in the fact they buy distressed inventories and the like. I have been away from De for some time but if you don't receive enough info im me and I will call some friends up home and see what they hear. Rick

This other shop in DE I think they dont get along. They dont play nice with each other and I think that might be the issue. At the time I was thinking of buying a 22 progression without a motor, was about two years ago.The only thing that bugged me is the install fee. What is fair?Ive mounted a merc 150 years ago with a freind. We used 5200 and screwed on the outboard.Hook up the gas line and contols/battery cables.WHY do they think they can charge $1500 to mount an outboard?OK,Maybe I think $500 is ok.WHAT IS FAIR???????????????????????????????????????????????

Its a hard way and dealers took some really hard hits up in De and things got goovy I remember almars to be straight up. As for the 1500 mounting I would think you could bargain that in price. I don't see people lined up to buy motors and some of the boat manufaturers have access also to left over inventory to prerig. Price becomes competitive but under the guidelines of the manufacter. Most everyone I knew is just surviving up there and again alot of used inventory and repo product out there. Some sales are cost and there is a rebate to the dealer. Rick

And another thought is there are many supporting vendors that seem to be real competitive and have inventory on the board. Rick

1500 sounds pretty steep if all the rigging is already in the boat. If it's just slap the motor on and hook everything up, that can be done in 4 hours. At 110 an hour that's less than 500 and way less than 1500. I did a de-rig of a merc and rigged on a Yammi in 15 hours....... thatincluded replacing the controls, gauges, control cables and wire harnesses (the steering was the same).......

I bought a new leftover carbed 150 and all new rigging from Almar's a few years ago. I asked the question about installing myself and was told that they had to do the install for warranty purposes. What they did allow me to do was pick up all of the rigging ahead of time and install it myself. Then I brought them the boat and the only thing they had to do was hang the motor and connect all of the rigging. I'm not sure if they will still do that or not, but it saved me several hundred in installation costs. Certainly worth asking about.

I would definitely buy from them again.
