Raker Equivalent?
Hi,
I'm currently running a 22" raker on my 18ft Gambler. Top speed is good, but out of the hole is marginal. Last time I had a full load, livewells full and a wet boat from rain, I was lucky I was close to the ramp, because it wouldn't go on plane. Anyway, running my v6 crossflow at 5500, I still have some RPM left on top, so I'm thinking of dropping an inch in pitch to a 21". Rakers come in 2" increments, so my question is, what other prop is roughly equal to a Raker and comes in a 21 pitch? Thanks.

I had a Hoss triton once that acted very similar to my Raker. They were both 24pitch.

You need a good through hub 4-blader on that boat, with a little testing I think You'll find that You'll gain performance in every area... Lots of good options out there, but I won't start spouting because I'm used to props hubbed for Mercury... I'm sure that many of these same props can be found with OMC hubs though...

Four blade huh? I've heard that. Any idea where to start? Less diameter? Less pitch or same?
Elwood: Oh no, the motor! We've thown a rod!
Jake: Is that serious?

You're at 5500
You could consider a 20 raker which will probably only bump you up 200-300 rpm, or a 21 Tempest Plus with an OMC hub kit.

Something like a Trophy, Predator, or Hydromotive... Diameter will probably be in the sub 14" range like 13.750", and the pitch will probably around the same or a smidge less depending on load...
To be honest, I've made a possible slight mistake... When I first read Your initial post I mistook Your boat to be a 22'er, instead of an 18 footer... A 4-blader will still work well, but there are still some 3 -bladers that should do well also... Tempest are good 3 bladers for bass boats, Hydromotice stuff, Triton, Choppers, and You may could try and ol' OMC SRX prop if You could find one... I will also add that If You weren't even able to plane off, then something sounds abit off like an an engine down on power a bit, waterloggeg boat more than wet carpet would account for, etc... Was the engine bogging, or was the prop cavitationg and just spinning up..?Last edited by Ted Stryker; 02-28-2010 at 08:35 AM.

BRP VIPER!!!!! Viper is a great prop. Real aggressive like a raker with plenty of bow lift. Will not slip out of the hole so bad.
If it is a johnyrude then Raker and Viper are the only ones for me unless its an old badass then an SRX is choice. Viper is what your looking for.Last edited by Rude Runner; 02-28-2010 at 07:35 PM.

When I say it wouldn't go on plane, it just bogs, with the throttle wide open at maybe 2500 rpm. Gamblers are very stern heavy boats. The bow points at the sky when you try to go up on plane. With a light load it takes off like a rocket, but there's at least a 500 lb difference between a light load and a heavy load. On an 18 1/2 ft boat, that's a lot. I've adjusted the engine height up and down. Too high and the prop blows out going on plane. I've got it adjusted now just a smidge below that point.

Just so you know always check the engine height by having someone tell you where its running through the water at full speed, Unless a boat is way to fast for someone to hang on to the deck and look. Raker's love to run with about a 1/2 inch of blade tip out of the water trimmed right at full speed. Make sure your two back exhaust ports under the bottom engine pan are not going under water when you try to plane off. That would kill it. All bass boats are ass heavy. If everything checks out try a four blade but don't buy one till you know it solves your issue. OMC made a Shooter and now they have a Renegade in Four blade. OMC and BRP make really good props. I have found them to be great at handling and throw wild rooster tails but they lack it on top end compared to three blades, Sometime they do work great on a certain type hull though. Try it, Its the easiest thing to try.

No, the cavitaton plate is just at the suface trying to get on plane. The propshaft is 3 1/2" below the pad. This boat will lift the bow as high as you want at speed, to the point where it looses speed. Used Rakers are cheap. I'll try a 20 incher first. I used to have a 14.25 by 26 inch Hoss "elephant ear" from the 70's that worked great, and looked even better, you could slice cucumbers with the blades, but it met its demise on a turtle or log or something. I wouldn't mind having something like that that looked badass and ran fast, but getting up on plane in all conditions is an absolute must.

I don't what it did, but i remember the visual difference in the viper and raker was at the exit of the hub, the viper flared out a bit, but the raker hub was straight. I think the raker was supposedly a little less bow lift, that's what i heard.
