Im not really sure, I caught it real late on the news last night and apparently the plant is under construction and they were purging the gas lines and then the plant blew up. The pictures they had on the news are pretty crazy, theres only 2 walls standing & a big hole in the middle of the plant.

My guess at the cause is static electricity from the dry weather combined with human error.

Glad that didn't happen during the river run.

    Sad...

I live towns away and felt/heard it.

Being in the construction business it really hits home for me.

It will take years to rebuild the nearly complete plant and more importantly, some families will forever be mending wounds.

RIP those that lost their lives.

There are tons of rumors floating through the industry right now, but we will see what the next 72 hours (search warrant) brings to light.

I am a pipefitter in UA Local 46 in Toronto, this really hits home for me and it seems strange with all the saftey measures implemented in these co/gen stations for testing and start up that it would be something basic as apposed to a failure of some sort? regardless, that,s for the powers to be to determine but at the end of the day lives were lost and it really makes you think how quickley everything around you can change????
So fellas, be gratefull for what we have. My condolences go out too the families who suffered the lose of a loved one in CT last night.

I've heard of accidents like this happening. It only takes one person to do something wrong.
Years ago, on an offshore production platform, with double and tripple safety systems a major accident occured. A pipefitter cut into the wrong pipe and the pipe had nat gas at 1000 psi in it. Needless to say the person not only didn't survive, there was no body to be found. One person, one big mistake.
