    1998 200 Mariner Super Magnum

    I am looking at a Champion 203 Bass Boat that has a 1998 Mariner 200 Super Magnum on it. I know nothing about this engine. Is it reliable as a bass boat fishing , pleasure motor. Any thing I need to know special about the operation of this engine. Do you have to run preium gas ? How are they on fuel vs regular 200 eft. Thanks for the replys.

    I think that's the same motor as the Promax 200. If it is, it came with a CLE, Torquemaster or Sportmaster, solid mounts, glass reeds, and a higher rev limiter. Regular gas.

    How are they on fuel vs an EFI 200. I don't have a heavy foot. I had a GT 150 a few years ago that sucked gas. I just don't want anthing that sucks gas more than the ordinary outboard under normal running conditions. Thanks for the help

    A Pro Max is not the best for a heavy boat like a Champion ... JMHO Much better off with a 3 liter..

    The 98 Promax/Supermag were/are great engines. Your statement above I placed in red puzzles me though?? If the engine is carbed it is not a Supermag. I would do or have two things done if it were me.
    (1) a compression check on all 6. A bone stock motor should see 120 ish and not vary over 5 psi between cylinders.
    (2) A cylinder leakdown on all 6. You should be no higher than 8% and thats boderline to needing a re-ring IMO.

    I agree with that but one never really knows. Just tried to make sure he is getting what he is told.

    It is fuel injected.Comparing to a stock 200 efi on fuel. It is on a 203 Champion Bass boat. Just getting thoughts on this motor before purchasing boat. I have been told champ too heavy for this motor. but not looking for speed just reliable motor.

    The Supermag will perform better than a production EFI 200. Personally I'm Not familure with the Champion Bass boats but then again most Bass Boats are heavy with the exception of a few.

    Like I posted earlier IMO only,.... as others may agree or disagree.
    Do two things;
    (1) Compression on all six
    and
    (2) Leakdown on all six.

    As far as the boat integrity? Well, Floor needs to be checked as well (and especially) the Transom.

    Good Luck!!!

    promax

    The Promax will do fine. Not much difference between the Promax and 200EFI. Both would be at the HIGH end of the 10% rating factor. Dependability wise the Max should be about as dependable as any other 2.5 that keeps the locator pins from popping out. As far as the motor/boat combo, the 200 will do fine. Yes a 3.0 is torquier but you have what you have and it will do fine. Much cheaper to buy a smaller pitch prop than a 3liter motor.
