    Mercury Opti XS motors

Is there anything that these motors are prone to doing.

I have a 500 hour 250XS that detonated number five. I can find no obvious reason for the problem...............Any suggestion?

    lean

nr 5 cylinder is always going first at lean condition
    typical
look for fuel problems: clogged in boat fuel filter, hole in fuel line,
red fuel filter in the vapor separator

mark the injectors fuel and air and send them out too test/clean
    brucato does a good job

put the injector with the most pur back in nr5 cilinder

did you get a warning on the smartcraft ?

try too get a readout with an ddt digital diagnostic terminal

is the air compressor ok ?

what year is your engine ?

Dirty injectors most likely. 5 it seems is always the one to gag first.

The ol' 500 hour mark. Get this, not only did consumer relataions, the regional tech rep stated that 500 hours is about the life span of these motors. Particularly if there is extended trolling involved. I did'nt believe the customer when he told us, so we had a few different people call in and they basically got the same story.

Compressor oiling will always be an issue, but to keep these things going, regular injector cleanings, fuel system upkeep, spark plugs, and one of the more important things is correct operating temperature.

If your going fishing get a fourstroke, if you have a bass boat get an optimax and sell it/trade it in as the warranty comes up for expiration.

I will say one thing, on one particular Optiflop this summer Merc did pony up and supply a powerhead/compressor and a few injectors on an 04 motor no less.

i have one 2004 still oke at 980 hours

    I have a 2004 250xs with 980 hours
    440 hours trolling
i plan too do some extra maintenance

just pulled the heads everything looks nice

also opened up the compressor everything seems fine little oil and dirt on reeds inside compressor only

do you think i need too change the compressor bearing assembly kit
seems the one in my 2004 is much more expensive as the newer ones
maybe there is a quality difference in the older and newer compressors

    for 2004 250xs 653-833146T04 --CONNECTING ROD $143.43

    for 2006-2009 250xs 653-833146T06 --CONNECTING ROD ASSEMBLY $49.87

also important too look at temp

always look at engine temp before you put the trottle down
tstats can be clogged and stay open
i had experienced this a few times with this 3.0 ltr engines
maybe this got something too do with the holes in front of the bullet of the lower unit and running in shallow waters and the big t stats

if engine is too cold on take off it can cold seize

    opti

This is a customer motor..........No codes on the DDT, no stuck thermostats, plugs were fairly new.

The motor got a set of later low dome pistons (this is a 2004 motor) and a new air injector in #5. All other air injectors got a does of power tune with them opened, then they set until reassembly.

The compressor looked fine other than belt dust on the reeds. I talked to Mercury and ask why they do not run a air filter for the compressor in this motor........... this was their response!

"From and engineering standpoint, it was a cost savings measure"

Is there a valid reason why they run 120* thermostats? Can I run a 130 or a 140 and bring the operating temp up some?

Chris, i deal wit a lot of opti's that commerical fisherman and guide fishermen are using. most of them have 2000 plus hours on them. had to change a couple powerheads with detnation problems. Merc would always sent me a new powerhead and 6 new coil kits. the ones i replaced never had a problem again with the powerhead. later Larry D

    Hours

    Larry

I thought 500 hours was light. Do the coil kits come wtih drivers or is it just coils and wires?

this 250xs has too run on 91 all 2003 2004 and 2005 models

could also be old gas in tank lost its octane

i am also curious if this engine can run on the higher temp t-stats

If it has grey Merc fuel line on it anywhere. cut it open and check. We have seen tons of this line that the ethanol has released the inner lining and caused major problems.
