    2.0 Block interchangeability

I have found that the external parts for a Mariner/Mercury 150HP 2.0L powerhead are interchangeable to the 2.0, 2.4, and 2.5 on this forum. My NEW question is:

I have a 150HP 1985 block (minus all externals, it's complete minus all externals and is was a carbureated engine). Would this 2.0L block be useable as a replacement for a 1996 150HP Merc block? I don't know if the EFI block is the same as a carbureated (1996 lists both types of fuel management), but my guess is that the intake manifold and fuel system components determine the EFI or carbureated type, and the block MIGHT be interchangeable.

    thanks

All production 2.0L will be horizontal fronts past 92. There are block date stamped in the 90's but are replacement direct replacement engines for the 80's. If it is 96 EFI then it is a 2.5L not a 2.0. The only EFI 2.0l is a true race engine. It will be a direct replacement for 83-91. It will fit back to 80 but will have different head design. It will fit the 96 mid and would have a exhaust size mis-match. But will not work with the EFI set up.

    Replacing 150HP (1996-carb) block with a 1985?

I'm not sure I understand all you've said. If the 1985 V-6 2.0L 150HP block is connected to the 1996 (carbureated) mid-section, is there a mis-match on the exhaust? Are all the components from the 1996 motor going to be a direct bolt-on for the 1985 block?

    thanks

The COMPLETE 85 2liter powerhed will drop rite on the 96 midsection......The 96 EFI willnot bolt on the 85 front end, because the 85 iz a vert reed mota, and the 96 is a horz mota!!...

IF U want to make the 85 a EFI, and put the 96 efi on the 85 mota, U would have to find a Pre 90 2.4 200, horz front half, and put it on the 85 2liter...then slot the 4 center manifold bolt holes, and the EFI from the 96 will bolt to the 85 2liter!!!!.....

Wrench'in, Ya had me cornfuzed too...But, bout everthang cornfuses me!!!

Yeah, all I wanted to know was if the 85 rotating assembly (block/internals) will be a bolt-on replacement to the 1996 2.0 carb parts and bottom/mid. I think I understand it to be okay to do it.

You gotta way wit dem words, dude!

    AGAIN A 96 150 EFI is a 2.5L not a 2.0L. A 96 150 carb is a 2.0L

    If you have a 92-up 150/175/200 XRI (EFI) it is a 2.5L
    If you have a 92-00 135/150 Carb it is a 2.0L

LIke REX said...2.0L will have to be taken apart and have a 2.4L 200 front inastalled for the EFI to even bolt up. Then would probably have to have a custom fuel curve in the ECU to feed the 2.0L correctly. If you are selling this off ebay as a direct replacement for a guy with a 2.5L EFI. He will be pissed especially if he has like a something like a 21' statos especially after adapting it. Mecury only made the Oversea's HP 2.0L that was EFI. I seen a 2.0L on ebay for $300. Is that yours??

The exhaust mismatch.....The 96 2.5 150HP has a small exhaust opening on the bottom of the block. The 2.0L has a larger exhaust opening. It will bolt up with no problem. The exhaust will just overlap the adapter on the mid.

The exhaust will be the least of his problems if I understand what he really wants to do. I think he wants to be able to just unbolt all the "outside" stuff and bolt it on the '85 without changing, fabing or buying any other parts. Which ain't going to happen.

    How close am I powrguy?

Heads wont fit, intake won't fit, exhaust divider won't fit, Top bearing cap may need modification to accept the 96's stator which is more than likely a 40 amp. And you will need to find a place for the voltage regulators. Better off going to a 16 amp system. Fuel pump won't fit. Ignition system will fit. Carbs will swap over and should be about right in jetting.

Piddly..diddly. Easy enough to make. I think the rod is 3/4 of an inch shorter or something like that on the vertical motors.
