air bubbles in oil and . . .

Hi, I am a new owner of an '87 Black max 150 XR2. When I drained the lower unit oil the other day about 5 ounces came out; the capacity is 24.
What should I check for possible problem areas that would cause this much loss? Also, oil was milkshake. Vent and drain plugs were tight and o-rings in place.

I filled the unit with new oil using a Quicksilver hand pump that screws into a quart bottle. There were many air bubbles going through the tube into the lower unit. Continued pumping until overflow just kept air bubbles coming. Is there a way to "pop" these bubbles once they are in the unit?

Many thanks for any suggestions, Larry

Take the lower unit off, remove the water pump, drain the oil and pressure it up with 5 pounds of air. Use soapy water around the driveshaft, shift shaft and prop shaft seals. Also, spray the soapy water down into the housing where the prop mounts. Any bubbles and you got a leak there. The two most common places is the propshaft seal and driveshaft seal.

Personally, I'd reseal the whole thing.

just get it over with and start fresh with all new seals, much cheaper in the long run... about the air in the oil while filling just let it set for awhile and check the level and add as needed.
