merc lower experts:please help: cam follower question
I have a marine mechanic buddy who is not very internet savvy putting a gearcase together for me. He has two different cam followers and neither one will work. He says there must be a third offering. Is this true? I have looked on merc parts catalog and can't seem to find but two styles. He says we need one with the flat spot on the top of the follower instead of the side like I have. We have one with the flat spot on top, but the flat spot is about twice as wide as the slot is. He is putting together all the parts out of a 25 in lower that had a leak into a 20 inch lower that I already had. Any advice on this would be appreciated. The cam follower is 200 bucks from merc, so I don't want to spend that and it be the same thing I already have. I don't have the case numbers, but they are both the large gear and bearing cases. Thanks again for any help..........

I don't know what the case came off of. The engine is a 220 laser powerhead on a 25in mid. The gear case is a large bearing case circa 1991 or 92. The cam follower will not go down in the hole. I am gear case ignorant, so that's as much as I've got. I mainly want to know if there are more that two different cam follower part numbers for a big gearcase.

cam follower
we are talking about the shifting device right?? only a flat one and one with a shoulder on it for hi po stuff have you tried installing the prop shaft without the cam some cases have the forward socket for the prop shaft screwed up and it wont go in because of that reason .what is the casting number on the case tail shaft 1647-9147 or9147 c or 9147 c1 if it aint one of these??? FYI just about all 2.0,2.4,2.5 V6 case except very early preload and xr4 and early xr6 uses the exact same cam except hi po and they will work anyway you have some other problem

It's all 2.4 stuff. I'll try to get a casting number tomorrow. He's put gearcases together for 30yrs and can't figure this one out.
