Allison Sister Ships
Thought there might be some Allison R-series/OMC V4 lovers out there...a few photos of mine (blue/white) and Bill Gohr's (orange/white) Allison R15 "nearly identical" twins.
Thanks to Bill Gohr, Mike Farmer and Ronnie Holzmacher for helping me put this rig together. I love this little rig...it's a barrel of fun. Ran 77.6 on it's first top end run, turning a 27" OMC cleaver @ 6800 rpm. Lots more left, will easily run 80 when dialed in. Boat handles beautifully, is very fast for what it is, and accelerates hard as heck for a V4 with a 27" prop. Still have my old 28" Mercury cleaver from numerous Nationals to try.
The boat is a 1976 Allison R15, rebuilt/restored by Mike Farmer (Farmer's Fiberglass). Gohr built/assembled the engine, which has been painted to look like a 1974/75 Evinrude Strangler (consumer model) and actually has an original 1974 Strangler hood. But, it is anything but...too many custom features to list.
Ronnie shortened the engine and did a masterful job installing the Mazcone (remember those?) nosecone and sculpting the side water pickups (a la OMC Mod-VP in the 1980s).
Rigging is strictly old-school J-Production...cable steering, Nydahl foot throttle and shifter, new-old-stock OMC 8k tach and water pressure gauge, Nydahl cable trim indicator.
Thanks to Nick Winski for making such beautiful renditions of the Nydahl race hardware.
Another project boat "completed" (they're never really completed).
Hope the photos load properly.
John

Thats what I'm talking about. I love the older stuff as much as the newer, and agree 100% the little boats are a blast to drive. John, I've got Video in the lounge of my 15 Ft. Invader running at over 77 on GPS . Might be a few pages back now but check it out if you like the smaller stuff.
Great looking little boat

John, WOW! You guys really got a pair of head turners. You GOT to quit showing me stuff like that....the first time I see one of those old rigs rotting away in some old barn or back yard I'll be dragging it home with me for another project. Actually wanted one since I saw Scott and Don Bridges blue original with the twister....
Outstanding.OK, I got down off the porch and ran with the big dogs....kinda sore now....think I'll just lay here in the flowerbed for a while...

Very nice! Love the flywheel, I didn't know one was available for the V4.
Any chance of getting a close up of the trim indicator rigging?

thanks, Pete
I don't know how to post them that big.
The flywheel is an original KR-15 (Super Strangler) aluminum/steel flex flywheel, right down to the blue anodizing.
The ignition is from a 1977 140.
The midsection is from a late 1970s 140; Ronnie shortened it 4-1/4" for me and got rid of all the salt deposits. He also did the gearcase (water pickups and nosecone, and cambered skeg).
The clamp, swivel bracket and trim assembly are all from a 1986 3.6XP V8.
The lower saddle was custom machined and welded years ago by a friend of mine.
The engine has lots of good stuff done inside (courtesy Gohr); porting, finger ports, 135 heads, reeds/cages, 1-3/8" carbs with primers.
