Paint/Body Guys....
whats the secret to keeping from gumming up D.A. paper on your first pass over freshly cured mud???
Paying almost a buck a pc for 40 grit 3M and hate round canning it after 30 seconds use.
Thanks, GaryI'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

let it cure longer, also, a heat lamp helps.

Mud
I feel your pain I walk around the shop all day a look at paper laying on the floor. Your mud is really not dry or not enough hardner. I realize its easier to knock down at that point so I take my air line and try to blow the mud away as I sand, it seems to help. I also have a wirebrush that attaches to my airline that cleans the mud out of the paper but you can use a regular wirebrush. You kinda just chalk it up to the cost of repair. That is what most people don't get when I write an estimate, the sand paper is .75-$1.25 a sheet, tach cloth $1.00, plastic I cover you car with $3.00... Its all small amounts but adds up by the end of the job and makes it tough to work for anyone other than the insurance companies. I don't know if that answers or helps but that my .02.
Good Luck Jerry

Been years since I used one but perhaps if you start with a cheese grater style body file and knock the top off it won't gum as much. It seems like that top layer is the worst. I remember buying one many years ago for under 20 bucks.

Take a paint stick, and smack the paper on the bottom of the DA sander a few times...it will usually knock most of the gummed up stuff off of the paper so you can keep using it

Get some of the ultra lite filler. It sets up quick, sands easy and dosen't clog the paper.

Well............
I mix it hot enough that it only lasts a couple of mins on the board but I can come out and sand it 2 days later and still plug up paper. Mud is only a couple mnths old and been in the garage entire time.
I like the wire brush idea. Thaty sounds killer and will try it tomorrow.I'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.

Hope you are not using bondo on a boat......
Fiberglass reinforced polyester/vynilester resin, gel coat, epoxy, or epoxy sealer. All of which are even more time consuming to tool down.
That should stir things up_but my 2 clams......

Already using ....
a good filler.
And yes I'm using bondo on a boat Using it as a fairing material only and above water line. Will be covered by epoxy sealer before getting 2 part paint.
Have done it this way for yrs and yrs with no issues at all.
BTW, I'm also using "car" paint on my boatI'd rather be competitive w/junk I built in my garage than win w/stuff I bought.
