Which silicone to seal outboard mounting bolts

Heading out to West Marine tomorrow morning to pick up some sealant so I can mount my new outboard.

What is to be used to seal up a motor to the transom? Silicone?
I couldn't find a tech on setting motor height either, anyone got any good links?

use Boat Life. any urethane is good never use straight silicone. what ever you look at make sure it says for use below the water line. 5200 is real good stuff but it is more adhesive than sealer. Once you glue something with it, it's there and not coming off with out tearing the gelcoat off with it. Boat Life is a good product.

I use 4200... 5200 will do the job also but if You ever have to remove the jackplate it can be real difficult and can actually remove some gel coat...

Very mild by this forums standards. It's a Hurricane deckboat, party boat that is getting a 200hp Mercury EFI engine.

Everybody bashes silicone but it's always sealed fine for me. 3M 4200 is good too and not as ferocious as the 5200. The best thing is to seal the wood inside the holes with epoxy, then just use silicone to keep the water from leaking into the boat.

Silicone isn't bad stuff...I've seen it pull gelcoat off too. I've used the black Permatex silicone many times, but the clear is also fine.

Make sure you clean up the excess 4200 before it cures!

Use Varsol (mineral spirits) for clean-up.

    Sikaflex is Great

Sikaflex 291 is great, similar to 3M 4200. Silicone is garbage - a great way to gaurantee a transom job in your future.

The problem with silicon, like you find at the hardware store is it really doesn't seal very well after a period and it contains a mild acid that can cause corrosion of aluminum.
If you use 4200 or 5200, both good use a heat gun to remove the item later, no gelcoat damage. 5200 is a permanent adhesive/sealant. Boat life is a great product and water will hasten it's cure, but does take some time to set as does normal 5200.
Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience.

The 4200 went on smoothly, good coverage and hopefully no leaks.
Wish they had it in clear but white is ok too I guess.
    Thanks for the help guys.
