Welcome to Scream and Fly. If ya got low water pickups you need a low water pick up cone that goes over the point of the gear case and the hose goes in the fitting at the other end. If the holes are on the side of the gear case ya need {ear muffs} any hardware store of marine store will have those ones. The Low water pickup ones are a little harder to find but can be ordered. Personaly I would just bring her to the lake and start it on the trailer in the water if you need to start it before ya run to check somthing. Why do you need to start it before you go to the lake? Just make sure your batery is charged and go try her out at the lake. If she starts go boating and start breaking her in.

Unless you have a way to disengage the pump its best not to start a jet out of the water. But, the water supply line should be hooked to the pump, you can unhook your hose from pump and connect water hose.

Ear muffs on a jet... That'd be a neat trick!!!

What sort of pump are you running?

Because it is advisable that some parts inside the pump have water lubrication (berkeley rope seal, kodiak and Hamilton jet cutlass bearings) you want to check your pump can handle a dry run. I've have to service plenty of jets where the should not have been dry run. The cutlass bearing is usually teh culprit, just melts the rubber to the chrome sleive.

The pump should have a water off-take that will supply either the heat exchanger (if fitted), water pump or direct to the bloct with a priority cooler (if raw water cooled). You can tee into this line. Use a tee and a ball valve with a fitting for your hose on the end. Then simply turn on the hose, turn the valve, and all is well.

Remember, it is important to chech that the valve is closed when running across the lake, else the motor will run dry and overheat causing $$$ damage. Simply start the motor, then hang your head into the enigne bay, if water is being pumped into the boat the valve has been left open, stop engine and close it. ALWAYS check the engine bay when starting the motor for the first time every day!!!
