DIY Reeds - Does the shape matter?
I've got a '92 V-150 2.0 Black Max. - Standard carburated with 5 pedal reeds.
I want to make my own reeds from some 500 micron FR4. The stock stainless reeds have a teardrop shape being thinner toward the mounting screws. When I make my own reeds from the FR4 does the shape have to mimic the original? I have reeds off an 85 hp Force that are exactly the same except for the teardrop that would be easier to use for a pattern.
Thanks in advance.

what is 500 micron FR4? just curious, I plan to make some reeds at some point and was curious what the best material would be.

500 micron is the thickness. It equates to roughly .020"
FR4 is circuit board material - epoxy and fiberglass....

Most of the older style tear dropped shaped cage openings can be machined to the new style rectangle shape to flow more volume...

So the new reeds can be one large rectangle instead of individual fingers?

I didn't say that, I said the 10 tear drops can be altered to 10 rectangles...

But what about the reeds themselves? I know Boyesen uses a large solid reed as opposed to individual fingers.

IMO I have been successful with single stage configuration reeds ONLY and Tony Doukas Reeds at that . I have had ZERO luck with the Boysen reeds and or their configuration in any motors I build in the past so I refrained from using a product that was IMO sub par for my application . Others may love em I could care less I will NOT build a motor with them installed, they may be fine on low rpm fishing motors but won't make the trip on High Perfomance application that I've witnessed....
