tuning with a gate valve?
I know its really old school...but how do you set your gate valve on a jet...pressure at idle? temp at idle? pressure at wot?

Call up or go to REXMAR.com and buy a thermostat kit. I have a boat engine machineshop and we see cracked exhaust seats all of the time from peeps trying to limit water flow to "get the temprature up". When the water flow is restricted and you start the engine from sitting in the middle of the lake and you immediatly stomp the gas, the engine is making max HP and heat and the motor is nearly empty of cooling water. By the time the engine fills with the 2-3 gallons of water that is restricted from getting in there the heads are hot, especially in the exhaust seat area, and when the cold lake water hits the hot seat area cracks form. Not all at once, but a little bit every time you do that the cracks get a little bit bigger, until you have a problem. If your engine originally didn't have hardened exhaust seats and seat rings were added later, the cracks can allow the seat ring to fall out, and hold the ex valve open, and destroy a bunch of expensive stuff. Also if the water is restricted too much all of the cylinders won't cool evenly and detonation can occur in the hotter ones. We have also seen a bunch of boats with no issues from restricting the flow either. It probably depends on the HP level, and how you drive the boat. Do you feel lucky? 1TIMINATOR
