Trailer pros and cons
What is the difference between a single axle and a double axle when the boat weight is not an issue? Which one is better and why?

single axel is easier to turn tighter and quicker, less rottating assemblies means lower maintenance .
double axle spreads the load better, more road tractions which can be a possitive if your running down dirt roads or wet highways.
but if it is not necessary then whatever fits your budget.
its better to spend say 2k on a single axle in very good condition and need nothing, rather then that same 2k on a double axle in decent condition that needs maybe a lil tlc89 charger-93 merc 2.5L 245hp

Single axle is easier to move in the yard, cost less going through tolls. Only have 1 axle to maintain and 2 tires instead of 4 to worry about.
Dual axles have the cool factor and you have a built in spare. I got a dual axle trailer for my Quartershot; So weight was difinitely not an issue. ChuckCHUCK & TRACY FREELAND

With a tandem axle trailer when you have a blowout, the trailer usually stays right side up. Single axle will go nuts when losing a tire. Tandems give you a little safety factor. And like beer 30 said, built in spare..... Just my 2cts..

I've heard it said that a tandem axle trailer pulls better and gets you better gas mileage. Is there any truth to that?

They will pull better as far as not swaying as much but as far as gas mileage I would think they are worse with the extra weight and rolling resistance of the extra tires. I've towed with both and how fast you tow is your biggest difference in gas mileage. Rick

Single axle:
-Move by hand more easily
-less tires to buy when they dry rot
Tandem axle:
-safer in the event of a blow-out of burned bearing
-they will "step over" potholes with much less shock to Your boat
-if the axles are sprung correctly then they'll go over bumps with less shock to the boat
-the tongue weight of the trailered load doesn't rock up and down as much over uneven roads
-larger fenders offer a better step
I prefer a tandem if I don't have to move around by hand...Kevin Kiser

Lawn
The tighter you turn with a tandem on your lawn the more it will shred the lawn. Regardless of whether you are pushing it by hand or hooked to a vehicle. That can make a big mess of your yard if you use it regularly. Just a point to consider if you don't really NEED a tandem.
