sportmaster question
lately ive been getting water in my sportmaster. i have changed the water pump and base 2x. i changed the shift shaft seal, and did a 15lb vacuum and pressure test. the case does not leak during the test even when turning all the moving parts. i have the feeling that when running high speeds, the water pump is acting like a restrictor and the water pressure is building up and being forced through the water pump base seal. it is really starting to piss me off. any ideas on this? im tired of changing gear oil. Just yesterday i blocked off one hole to reduce the amount of water allowed in. Im hoping it makes a difference

well I checked it again, the oil is slightly discolored from water. i guess that theory is shot. How can this thing maintain pressure and vacuum during a test and still pull in water? maybe when the hot gearcase gets submerged in the water after a run it pulls the water in while cooling down? I'm guessing here. I can not afford to replace my lower unit. and Im tired of changing the oil after every time out. Im open for suggestions. thanks

helmut , what condition is your driveshaft in down around the pump base seals? have you checked your propshaft to see if it has alot of wear by the seals , if either does that is most like your problem , also do you fill your gearcase all the way up with oil or do you leave a little room for expansion? if you have some wear or a groove on or around the seal area they usually dont leak until the rpms hit them.

On the drive shaft, if you run you finger nail over it, you can barely feel a slight indent on the shaft. The prop shaft was replaced last season cause it snapped off. There's no groove on it yet. the gear case is on it 3rd season

I would quit using those crappy Mercury fiber washers on the fill and vent screws. Switch to the plastic OMC ones. They seal way better.

Gearcase water
Good call, Yamaha makes a good washer as well. I just lost a LH CLE becauseof water coming in thru the drain plug, " I THINK". WHen I pulled the drain plug, I had water come out under pressure. It seemed like the oil had been displaced and the water filled the case. The base seal on the water pump was good, so I ran the boat one more time with a new drain washer and the water was not around, so the washer may have fixed the problem. To bad I had already flushed a bunch of metel threw the gear case. TOAST!!! Any body have a good left hand cle or sportmaster for sale? 1.87

Does it do this only after running fast? Or will a slow run do it also.

Change the washers and add a mercury racing overflow bottle in the boat.

Fast only
I've only had the boat over 100 once and after that run I found the water in the case.
