Maintenance advice for 24 valve Cummins
I just bought a 115,000 mile 2001 Dodge 2500 Cummins w/6 speed... It runs just fine and I like it so far but would like to know what the real world advice is for a "once over" for a clean bill of health... So far I've only changed the oil with 15/40 Rotella T and installed a new Purolator oil and air filter... What do I need to do next in terms of just covering My bases for reliability and dependability..? After these things get taken care of I like to talk about what mods are best for economy, performance isn't really a concern and comes very secondary to fuel mileage and clean operating manners... Thanks..

First of all, run ONLY the Fleetguard LF3894 oil filter on that truck. Since you don't know what it's had for maintainence, check the fuel pressure between the low pressure lift pump and the high pressure VP44 fuel pump. Every 50k it's supposed to have the valves adjusted, so I'd at least check them.

I reckon I need to get a fuel pressure gauge, and a Cummins manual to teach Me how to adjust valves or is it comparable to adjusting valves on a V8 gasoline engine..? I will definitely look into getting the correct oil filter, but do You think the Purolator will be OK until the next oil change..? Thanks..

It's really easy to adjust the valves. Each rocker has an allen head adjuster with a jam nut. Back the jam nut off, adjust the adjuster for proper clearance and retighten the jam nut. Recheck because a lot of times the jam nut will change the clearance.
