When I was 14 my dad bought a 14' Starcraft "Arrow" and we put our 45 Merc on it. Well that was OK, but it was to slow to barefoot behind. In the classifieds there was a '66 65 Merc short shaft just a few miles from where we lived for $500. Off on my bicycle I went to look at it. The guy wouldn't sell it to me, said " come back with your dad". So I did and then I bought it. When we got it home dad ( I sure miss him) was a little nervous about putting a 65 on a boat rated for 50, but always game. So somewhere we found a 1/2" piece of aluminium, put that on, then the motor. The 65 would push the boat over 40 MPH which was more than enough to pull skinny kid like I was. In fact it would pull 2 of us barefoot. Not performance by todays standards, but pretty hot for the late 60's.

the boat that started it for me was my dads 16' fishing hawk with a 150 inline merc. it was made in meridian ms. and the guy said he directly copied an allison tri hull bottom. not sure how fast but it would spin a 28 big ear pretty good once it got on plane. the first boat i got was a hydrostream varmint with a warmed over looper. it was running 97 when i slung a rod out of the side and chewed up the motor pretty good. its a good thing i was close to the ramp. my brother still has my old varmint so i would say that it has ruined him too........benji
hold on and hope for the best

    First Performance boat

This will really date me. In 1958 (while still in high school) my first performance boat was a 1956 Yellow Jacket Riviera with Twin Mark 55's on a Husky trailer. It was a rocket at the time at 45mph. I bought the new birch hull Yellow Jacket in 1957 as a left over and put a 35 Johnson on it. No zip there so I put twin Mark 55's on a year later to out run a friend of mine with a Mark 75 on a 14' Carter Craft. I still have photos somewhere.
