    Optimax Compressor

How many SCFM of atomization air does the Optimax require at WOT? Would it be possible to substitute a boat mounted 12V compressor and air tank like the ones used for air ride suspensions instead of the belt driven factory compressor? You can buy electric compressors on ebay for less than $150 vs. almost $1000 for a factory mechanical compressor. http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...sor+Components

I'll take that bet because I think he's just 1 of many with an arm's length of issues with the Opti.

Back to the original 'what is better' question: The big block Mercs have the advantage of the Sportmaster gearcase and factory solid mounts. These may or may not matter depending upon your application.

The BRP gearcase is OK for most bass boat applications. I'm not sure it will work in stock form if run even with the pad. Someone should know,

Almost everyone I personally know with an Opti has either lost a compressor, oil tank sensor, or both. The new 300's seem to be losing coils. Its really very frustrating. I have a boat that is different than most of yours. A dead engine for me doesnt mean lost race or tow back from the sandbar. I fish 20-50 miles from shore. I cant comment on anything Evinrude but my point is that the EPA has mandated us into engines that we cannot trust in a very unforgiving enviornment.

GUYS, Your Gonna Piss this guy off.....Lets try to help him, NNT, did you see me post that in EVERY drag race this year HO Etecs have Waxed Mercs ASS???? Did I post anything that did not pertain to the question, NO....So quit your Cry Baby Keyboard warrior crap, and try and help the new guys.....Not everyone Races boats at Rouen, and like posted above, I beleive those motors from all guys were Racing motors, If BRP,MERC<Yamaha wanna have a factory race, then they should.....We should worry if Mercury and BRP will stay in business, considering Genmar filed Chapter 11, Brunswick is not far behind, maybe BRP will buy them out.......

Demeanor, how many if any compressors do you think are from overheat issues ? I know that water line can get clogged but wondering if increasing the size would help ??

I don't think this is hijacking the thread

because getting the best powerhead on a lower unit that can't surface is useless for many of us. Is the BRP 300 LU any better? My only knowledge comes from reading posts on this site, and I thought I had seen several that suggest the LU on the BRP 300 is still not strong enough.

I think both the Optimax and ETEC are good products, In Australian ski racing towing two skiers the ETEC is beating the mercs even though the etec gearcase is run a lot deaper than the mercs. Both good products, both have had their problems but the Etec aftersales service is WAY better and a 3 or 5 year racing warrenty makes the choice easy in my opinion. I swapped from a merc to an ETEC and will never go back on the strength of the great service I have recieved.

The gear case on the 300 is the redesigned Magnum and is designed for big ass, heavy ass offshore boats. It is big, lots of drag, huge diameter, and dam near bulletproof. A lot like the Mercury FleetMaster and TorqueMaster cases, just bigger and beefier. The 250HO is basically the same powerhead as the 300, but comes with the redesigned Lightning 2 case that features "lowered" water pickups (they are still above the bullet though) and also has 3 different sets of intake grates that can be installed based upon operating conditions (scoops for raising the motor, standard, and a set with larger holes for operating in weedy conditions). The L2 comes in a 1.71 ratio and while stronger than the original lightning case, still does not hold up "as well" if surfaced for long periods of time.

I have 550 hours on my 250 pro xs Do i need to be worried about my compressor blowing apart . Its on a heavy boat and usally runs around 4500 to 4800 rpms . most of the time

I saw where there is no filter on mine for the compressor i took it appart and no filter where they used to put the filter
Does the compressor have its own belt or does it share the alt belt ?
and how often should a guy change those belts ?
