2.5 Block swap Question
Can a '96 or '97 2.5 drag block be used with the components from a '98 2.5 OS engine?
Would this result in the power equivalent of approximately a newer 280 hp motor?

Yes, they are the same parts. You will have 300 HP.

It isn't clear exactly what you are contemplating but even an early drag has pretty high rpm biased port timing and exhaust volume. A 280 isn't ever going to swing up like a drag with a 10 amp flywheel. A motor built out of drag block with 38cc heads isn't ever going be too impressive on the bottom.

What I am contemplating--I have very low time 2.5 260 hp motor. Want to upgrade to 280 "plus" very stock type motor. Am not drag racer--just lake racer interested in top end. Do not want to turn horendus rpm--just 8000 to 8500 occasionally. Drag motors hit peak power at 8500 which would be great.
Just viewing different options on the most $ efficient manner in which to buy the horsepower. Have located a used drag block and that is why asked question.
Are drag motors miserable idling and poor power at low rpm?

New style drags with the SVS run great, reasonable idle, super punch provided you leave the tight heads on them. The bottom gets awful mushy on a lake boat when you put on a set of 38s.
except of course N2O

if you only plan on turning it 8500, don't waste your money on a drag block. a pump gas 260 with some work will run just as good if not better then a pump gas drag under 8500 rpm's
