See now ya know for sure. Make sure you by the good gaskets from merc. Mine are 60 bucks for two so your are most lickely the same or less. In the patern bring the bolts to 20 first all the way around in sequence. Brush or with a qutip put a little light oil on the threads and top part of the bolt first. Your two stroke oil will work. You get a true tourque that way with less resistance. After they are all snug to 20 bring them the rest of the way slowly in order, not to fast because your threading stainless into aluminum remember. Make sure the right touque is used for the other bolts you but back on also and your good to go. Run some {seafoam} threw the gas with your oil. That will help clean the piston tops up of all that oil deposit from running to rich. It will smoke a bit but thats just the oil loosening up and burning threw. Treat your motor to a nice lunch and run some higher octain threw for a tank. or always.91 or 94ish what ever ya got there. By the sounds of it also theres a product called ACES you might want to run. In the search theres good reading on it. I just ordered some myself. Its sounds like great stuff to run all the time. We,ll see. Im happy for you. Dont be surprized if things arnt perfict right away. Just take her for a good run and let things get back to tempature and hopefully your good to go once it gets fed a proper diet.

Awesome! Do you use any kind of gasket sealing compound with new gaskets or are they just mated together by the torque on the bolts? Thanks for the tips, I will definitely treat her to Seafoam, higher octane, and read up about that ACES.

Thats a good lesson read some of the post. First things first check compression first, spark next, then start woundering save alot of time.

    gasket ?

no sealing compound. the gaskets should be labeled with "block side". make sure thats facing the right way. do just like whipper said to put the heads back on. definitely run the seafoam through to clean that motor up some. glad you got out so easy. and ditch the oil injection

Oceantraveler that is real generous of you taking the time to grab those gaskets and post pictures! That's cool, you have your own shop? Well let me know if your parts manual has made it's way home yet. I searched that part number on google and most pages that came up talked about it fitting 200 Mercs, but I'm not the expert so I'll wait to see what you guys find out! Thanks again for all the help, I'm real excited to get her on the water again. I've got boats on the mind...I even had a dream about boats last night, lol!

Yep, ya got the diseeze. That's one of the symptoms.

It's uncurable. Support costs are all your disposable income, some of the indisposable income, most (useless) non-boating relationships, a lot of both waking and sleeping time, etc.

Other symptoms include almost unbearable pleasure while sacking OMC's.

    hope it helps

Yes, and it only gets worse.
For me, it started with the same basic setup as you've got:
    '87 Baja Sport 170 (aka 170SS), '87 Merc 2.0 150 XR2.
    My first boat:
'89 Hydrostream Vegas XT, '90 Merc 2.4 Bridgeport PCU EFI

Its downfall: Lost oil injection on the lake, didn't have enough extra oil onboard for the right premix ratio (I dumped about 3/4 of a jug into 15 gallons of fuel when the oil injection warning came on).

How much do you guys figure a rebuild should cost?

Ahh haha yes, I'm seeing this now...just yesterday I was thinking the next girlfriend will have to like boats, lol. I took my ex out when we were still together and I had just gotten the Baja...all she could say was it was too windy and bumpy . Anyway, what was that definiton of a boat...a hole in the water you throw money into? But somehow worth it...sliding off the dock you lose all of the distractions, restrictions, and bustle of the land and somehow you feel free. Doesn't hurt that Lake Erie's so big you can't see the other side!

I'm pretty sure 0A181487 is right, found that stamped on the little silver pin/button thing on the port side of the powerhead and when I put it into Mercury Parts Express it recognized it as 150 V6 Marathon/Magnum/XR-2 family from 1978-1985. Parts Express also showed 1150725 as and equivalent serial in parenthesis next to the one I gave u guys, maybe that's more useful? That one shows up as 150 XR-2 1978-1985 series motors.

That's awesome! What kind of prop did u end up running for best results? Do you remember what size fuel tank was in her? The PO installed a 15 gallon steel bow tank, I'm wondering what the original setup was.
