I've been advised running 89 octane in a 2006 and later Racing Opti will help it idle smoother. There is also some advice out there that opening up the plug gap to .040" will help idle quality. My 08 idles very nicely with 89 octane and no change to the gap.

Most of what I've read indicates reduced horsepower with 91 and above octane.

BTW, there is some good reading and factory supported info over on the Bassboat Central forum (BBC) in the "Mercury 3 Liter Hi Performance" section. The mod is Don Weed, the GM of European Marine in South Carolina.

blkmtrfan, are you planning on taking advantage of the Merc Smartcraft capability? The gauges are quite reasonable and have some killer color and trim combos....Dealers these days will really hook you up with New products, anything to keep the staff and lights going......Trust me, work'em good..

    Eventually....

I plan to start with just a system monitor, but eventually upgrade all the gauges.

My plan it to bolt the motor on and go this year then do quite a few things that I have in the back of my mind over the coming winter

I have 2 of them on my center console, you will not believe the saving on the fuel consumption.
You will think your gas gauge is broken!!!!

My dealer threw in all of the other gauges for pennies on the dollar. They daisy chain into the system monitor, so all are easy to install if you decide to do it later.
